I love the Dune series and I wonder if anyone else has experience the master writings of Frank Herbert.

*Writings*, dummy. No film could compare to the books of the Master. Especially that one .

I'll forgive you though, because you didn't confess to liking Brian Herbert's attempts to continue the Dune Universe.

I've read all of Frank Herbert's Dune books, and the two McKie ones (Whipping star & Dosadi), and a good few handfuls of short stories (mmm, SF short stories...). Love'm all. What more can I say?

Ok - how about THIS one:

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

It's been far too long, but I devoured his masterpieces.

Ah, I knew I would find a few fans on DV. You guys think Brian Herbert should stop continuing Dune? I respect him as a writer, but his and Kevin J. Anderson's writings seem too different.

Too right :-). As I said, I can't think of much more to say other than . It would be interesting to hear from anyone who "tried but couldn't get into it"... because Dune particularly is very dense, but IMO an easier read than LOTR.

I think the radical break in continuity introduced by their interpretation of the Butlerian Jihad is why I and others are so annoyed with them.

I'm not a fan of Kevin J. Anderson. I think the new books have a rather less subtle approach, which is not a bad thing in and of itself but doesn't make for a favorable contrast. Despite that, I did enjoy "House of Atreides", one of the first prequels they did. I think most people aren't surprised that Frank Herberts son should attempt to expand on the Dune Universe, and accept that Frank is dead and no-one is going to write in quite the same way. But I just think their Dune 7 is an Abomination.

The Dune universe begs for something better than stereotypical evil robots.

I haven't even tried any of them not written by Frank, and am not likely to.

I've read the first three books by Frank Herbert and love them! I actually read Dune for the first time when I was in sixth grade. Took me a few months to get through it but I managed! I'm hoping to read the next two books, but I'm really not that interested in reading Brian Herbert's continuation.

Have you read anything else by Frank Herbert?

Ah yes, but is this not a good quote from the movie depiction?

I like David Lynch... no problem with the quote, except when it is attributed to F.H. - which it often is.

I love Dune... Awesomely written. Period.

I have never actually read a dune book, but my best friend Will loves them. He actually drew 2 pictures of the sand worms in science. If you want to see the pictures you can go to the art and creations link in my sig. there is the wacky one, and I will try to get the other more "realistic" one up there. I didn't help draw the better one, but I will try to borrow his science journal again and scan it.

also, I would like to read a few dune books. so can anyone tell me the name of the very first one. like not in the time line, but the one that first came out and was successful. My other friend, lowell's dad has pretty much the whole series. I think i might borrow a few.

That thread's a bit heavy for my poor dialup connection - if you could post the direct links so they can be viewed independantly that'd be great, thanks.

      Welcome to Dune.

Frank Herberts books were published in chronological order - I don't think he's written a single prequel. The first in the series is simply called "Dune".

The second one, "Dune Messiah", is IMHO the most difficult read, although I wouldn't recommend skipping over it because the later books do depend on it. Just a hint that you might want to take it easy and maybe not try to read it all at once :-).

This might be a little late but...I have started dune. like 80 pages in. And I don't understand what you mean by giving direct links.

I like the culture Frank Herbert created. Those sand, desert people. It's been a long time since I read the books.

I like Brian Herbert's books. My first book was actually "House of Arteides", read all the houses books. Guess what then, I read "Butlerian Jihad" still missing "Battle of Corrin" I really enjoyed those books. Maybe because I haven't read Frank Herbert's books first.

I really liked the first Dune, but I couldn't get into the next one. I tend to get bored with stories that start focusing on politics to much.
