      This is Ska.

I found out that far too many people don't know what Ska is. What a shame. So I found this Podcast that plays alot of Ska all day. It's a really long list with all different types of Ska. Jamaican original Ska, English Two Tone Ska, American Ska & Ska punk/Punk ska, Latin Ska, Celtic Ska, even Turkish Ska, Eastern European/Gipsy Ska, RockSteady Ska, Reggae Ska...etc.

You may think the 1 style Ska is terrible music while you would really like other types of Ska. I have this myself to some extent with Punk-Ska.

Well here is the Ska Podcast:
      http://www.squidoo.com/ska Enjoy.

Here's another one that plays alot of Ska too:
      http://www.myspace.com/skaisyourfriend

PS: Strangely I found out that the Dancing Banana: in the Smilies section in the posting menu bounces EXACTLY to the Ska Rythm of a Celtic Ska song and many other ska songs on the Squidoo Skacast.

      Isn't it

Well you see alot of people, when they hear Ska, they confuse it with Reggae since the term " Reggae" is pretty much the only term most people know for Jamaican music in general.

The main Difference between Ska and Reggae is the Beat and the Tempo.
Most typical for Ska is the timing on which the guitar accents are played. Upbeat in between the counting like: 1 -Chop- 2 -Chop- 3 -Chop- 4 -Chop-
Reggae puts those guitar accents more like this: 1 - 2Chop - 3 - 4Chop and the tempo is significantly decreased. If the tempo of this would be a bit increased we're talking RockSteady.

This Upbeat Ska guitar is accompanied by a typical ska beat which goes like this:

      1 -
      Base, open hi-hat
      2 -
      Snare, closed hi-hat
      3 -
      (mandatory pause), open hi-hat
      4 -
      Snare, closed hi-hat

Obviously Ska sounds more Pulsating, Energetic and playfull than Reggae and Rocksteady which is why I adore it. It really has a special, playfull, additude that I haven't found in any other music style. And if I have found the right, enthusiastic Musicians I´m going to make it a personal mission of mine to bring about the 4th wave of Ska.

And yeah I know Reel Big Fish. Allthough I am generally not so much into Ska Punk I do love their Ska. Seen em live once. that ruled

Hey, I'm listening to the Ska Podcast you mentioned in your first post. Admittedly, I didn't think I'd like it at all, cause so far none of the ska I've heard has particularly moved me, but as you said there is actually quite a variety of ska subgenres.

Anyways, I was wondering if there is a track list somewhere on that page that I'm missing out on, because I'm really enjoying the Celtic song and the one before it even moreso, but I have no idea what artists I'm looking for or anything, which is really unfortunate.

Thanks for sharing and starting this thread

On Skaisyourfriend there are playlists that name the songs and artists.
The Squidoo skacast doesn't have a playlist. Both have celtic ska episodes.
You can toggle to the next episode on squidoo. Episodes 8 and 8,5 on squidoo are dedicated to Irish/Celtic Ska. I totally love the very first song of Episode 8,5. I can play it perfectly on piano now.

Wow, I had no idea there were that many sub-genres. I love Two-tone ska, but original ska is great too. My favorite ska band is probably The Slackers sence The Aquabats arn't really ska anymore.

Ooh, I emailed the guy whose page the Squidoo podcast was on, and he gave me the track listings. They are here, in case anyone else was interested.

The only ska I've ever really heard and liked is stuff from the later years of the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra... I listen to Fantasia all the time. Other than that, though, I have to admit that I'm one of those people who misunderstands ska and lumps it all into one giant 'it all sounds the same...!' category.
