      City of Heroes/villains

Does anyone play this MMO? http://www.cityofheroes.com/gameinfo/synopsis.html

I'm going to start playing it because it looks fun. So fill me in. (I went away from WAR because I don't have a graphics card good enough.)

It is pretty cheap. About 20 bucks for the original and expansion in one set. You get the first month free and afterward pay a subscription fee.

I've actually been playing it for about three years, though only sporadically for the last two. I play on the Virtue server, which is RP-friendly, though I don't always RP either.

It's a very fun game, especially the character creator. There is an amazing amount of customization you can do, and I sometimes just spend some time making new costumes. The graphics are very good if you have a good card and can turn on/up all the options. There is no camping, and PVP is completely optional and zone-based.

Over the years they have continually added to the game, making new archetypes, powers, costume pieces, earned rewards, etc. There's a whole lot you can do, but my favorite part is... NO ELVES!

Let me know if you decide to join and if you come to the Virtue server (I also have a few characters on the Pinnacle server). I'd be happy to team with you for a few levels and show you the ropes.

I did look into this game a while ago and was going to buy it but then I learnt that you have to pay to play and it put me off it.

Cool. I'm going to get it later on today. I will either make a name based off of the word invidious or as some remake of the word Sandform. Sandrunk may be one hehe.

I am downloading the free trial right now just to check it out before I go and buy it later on today.

Paying for an online game is really just making sure patches come through NeAvo. People have to be paid to make new content and stuff. It is like having new content continuously added to your favorite game. If only they had made ff8 an mmo =P.

The trial is very good, from what I understand. Most of the functionality, minus in-game emails and broadcasts. I think there is a level cap as well, but probably high enough to keep you going for awhile.

I would definitely recommend starting on the hero side. It's slightly easier to pick up, and the archetypes are easier to understand. It's also a little gentler on the graphics cards, as they starting adding a lot of geometry with Villains.

For your first character or two, avoid joining what's called a "sewer team." This is a power-leveling type of group that can blast you through the first 8 levels pretty quickly, but you will learn very little if you haven't played for awhile first. It's a good way to fly past the early levels for later characters, but you'll learn nothing.

      hehe... ok.

By the way, the origin (magic, natural, mutant, etc) doesn't really have much effect on the gameplay. It changes the mission contacts and the types of upgrade pieces you're looking for, but it all comes out more or less a wash.

Tankers and scrappers are good choices for a first character while you figure things out, plus they both solo pretty well. Defenders (some at least) and blasters are fairly easy too. You might want to put off controllers for a couple of characters unless you want a frustrating trial-by-fire. They're great fun, but take a lot of learning.

I don't play meat-shields that often, but I do have one I like that I got up to about level 15 named "Micky Dismantle." He's dressed in baseball garb and swings a mean bat!

Not to hijack this thread or anything but there's a DC universe game coming out for the PS3 and PC which is similar to this which is a MMO set in the DC universe.

Not true, you get a month free, you have to pay the subscription and get an extra 30 days of free play. Lost out on that whne I first got this game.

Because of the aforementioned mistake in subscription (and a lack of money), I have been unable to play this yet, but it seems pretty cool.

Is there a way to turn down the graphics any? I seem to be having a few problems. 1. My cursor turns into a large square black box when I scroll over NPC's or other objects, 2. it keeps freezing on me.

Also...my health bar doesn't show any color it is just transparent all the time. I have to scroll over it to actually get it to tell me my health and even then it only tells me in a little pop up box.

Do you have the latest drivers for your card? You might want to double-check. None of those symptoms should be there.

yeah that does sound like a graphic card driver problem, that or your card isn't good enough for the game, i'm sure though there'd be a way to turn the graphics down in options some where, probably a "display" menu or something even though they're probably not that high right now anyways

Believe me my drivers are up to date lol. I have gone through hell making sure all my stuff is up to date just a few months ago. I have a chipset instead of a normal video card.

      I Have: Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family (Intel(R) GMA 950)

It played WoW extremely well...smooth and without any lagg bumps or freezes.

"Can you run it" says I should meet the minimum requirements.

Well I figured out a loop hole for my end/hp vision problems hehe. I just made them pop up on top of my character instead of in the normal stats spot.

it's still weird that the graphics are like that.. do you have vista? vista runs some games choppy/whatever else messed up with graphics, or used to, i don't know if they ever fixed those problems or not
