They've got some really good stuff, but I'm not crazy about them. I actually didn't like most of the individual songs on their American Idiot album at all, mostly because the style was distinctly un-Green Day-ish. Nimrod and Warning had some much better songs on them.

      Personal favorites:
      Castaway
      Waiting
      Fashion Victim
      King for a Day
      Ha Ha, You're Dead!
      Misery

I'm a huge fan of early Green Day. Dookie and Nimrod are modern classics in my opinion.

It was a sad day for music when American Idiot was released though...if Green Day can sell out, who's next?

PS. It turned out that Weezer was next...which is equally unfortunate

dear god, i remember the first time i heard 'we are all on drugs' on the radio at work. i was laughing my ass off at the pathetic excuse for music. i couldn't believe it when the announcer started swooning about weezer's 'awesome new song'

      green day

I'm a huge Green Day fan! You guys really have to understand they didn't sell out they grew up. I was a 15 year old lover of them when they came out with Dookie. I'd be so disappointed if they were still sing the same stuff I was into at 15. I'm still a huge fan and I'm 27 almost 28 now. So go figure. I was lucky enough to get free front row tickets(after fighting my way to the front of the pit) this year after the tickets sold out before I could buy them. The day before the concert I was so bummed and mad that I didn't have tickets cause I adored them and promised my 14 year old brother I would take him if I got tickets. My hubbie called me at around 11:00am and told me to go to the hotel right up the road from me now. I said, "Joe(my hubbie) we (the kids and I) aren't dressed yet." Plus I had an doctors appointment for my daughter at 2pm. He said one of the Green Day buses broke down and they need my car to go get a part. To drive them anywhere they needed to go and they would give me tickets. Lets just make a long story short, I got the tickets!! It was a great concert. Buy "Bullet in The Bible" great DVD

No, they totally sold out. When I want quiet, semi-depressing music, I've got Radiohead. I don't WANT Green Day to sound that way, 'grown up' or no.

Ditto on the Weezer thing, too. I can't stand We Are All On Drugs OR Beverly Hills. Both were total sell-outs.

And another band that went downhill was Eve 6. I loved Horrorscope and their self-titled, but their latest totally sucked, mostly because of that "Think Twice" song. UGH.

Yes, I agree. The newer stuff is kind of sold out. But that doesn't mean that they're any less talented, or that they're unable to write good songs anymore. Personally, I like the song Jesus of Suburbia.

I love the older albums to death. I don't have Shenanigans, 1039..., or Warning though. But alot of those songs are on International Superhits.

But you've gotta love "King For a Day!"

Homecoming and St. Jimmy were the only songs on that album I liked, and even those were only so-so.

Yeah, I think they're experimenting with songs that are a tad more "mature", and maybe they just didn't get it right this time.

I mean, you can't sing about masturbation forever...

Green Day SHOULDN'T be mature. I'd guess they hit the whole maturity thing right on the head, judging by pop culture's response to their latest album. But that's not the point-- It's not Green Day to be mature. It's not Green Day to be somber and melodramatic. Imagine if the Beatles played heavy metal. It just wouldn't be right.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But I guess they just tried something, and it didn't work. They took a risk.

I mean, at least they tried. If no one ever risked anything, the world would be kindah boring.

Hmm, since I like alot of Green Day's older stuff, is there any bands you guys reccommend that are similar? Just wondering.

The Pillows, some of Screeching Weasle's stuff, Hot Hot Heat, Orange, MxPx, and a few others. Those are all a bit different from Green Day, but the same general style. For lots more, check out Pandora

Green Day's new album is good, but it has far less long-term value then their old stuff. Their albums used to be celebrations, american idiot is just eh.

Green Day's new album represents everything that's wrong with music today.

Any Punk band that hits it big is considered a sell out. For an album that is so popular across the world I wouldn't really say they messed up. In concert they are quite loyal to their old stuff. Them along with Kanye West are among the few that are actually speaking out about Bush and the faults of the governement and media. I think their new album is just as good as their old. Maybe that is because I grow up with them I guess.

I dont like English songs only because I cant understand what most of them are singing. It means I cant catch the lyrics. I dont know English much.

And one day after installing new yahoo messenger with voice, I checked the yahoo radio within the messenger and I was surprised to hear a beautiful music. You should understand that I am using a dial-up connection of 36Kbps. So the song was buffering every now and then and playing again. That song was really beautiful. That was the best English Song I heard in my life. I clicked on the link to artist and took me to a page. In that page it was written that the song is "Wake me up when september ends" by "Green day". I googled the song title and it took me to the lyrics page at azlyrics.com. The lyrics was wonderful.

so what next ? I googled with the word mp3 attached at the end and it took 1hour for me to download the song completely. After that I heard the song may be more than 100 times. Oneday when I was surfing the net with this song playing in winamp, my father asked which is that song. Remember he is a pure Indian farmer who dont know English. But he said it is a good song. Play it loud.

      Summer has come and passed
      The innocent can never last
wake me up when september ends

like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when september ends

      here comes the rain again
      falling from the stars
      drenched in my pain again
      becoming who we are

      as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when september ends......................

Not really--Antiflag's built a name for themselves on government protest, as has Chumbawamba. Flogging Molly wrote a song about Bush and Iraq, "Screaming at the Wailing Wall", and are very outward about their opinions of the man. Living Things have done some anti-war, anti-Bush things, most noteably Bom Bom Bom. The Real McKenzies aren't quite as directly anti-Bush, but they've got a lot of general anti-American government stuff out there. There's a bunch more, too. I'm just too lazy to find all of 'em.

There are volumes of anthologies called 'Rock Against Bush'.

Either way, this is nothing new. Bands have been speaking out against government for years. Its disheartening to see Green Day jump on the bandwagon to sell a few more records and win a couple Grammys.

Eh, I was really hoping this wouldn't turn into some sort of argument / debate thing.

But one thing I really respect about Green Day is that they've worked their way up. You know. There's always been something that bothers me about ok-ish singers that hit it big out of luck, when there's so many better singers trying so hard, but they never get the record deal. But I guess that's life?

Hearing the american idiot album for the first time?

      Killer.

Hearing it over and over and over again again?

Not so spectacular. Not so spectacular.

Sure its great, compared to most other music out there, but i dont know, it just doesnt seem like the true green day.

True. But like I said, every band has to experiment sometime.

Anyone been to "Green Day Authority.com" ? It's pretty sweet.
