      The End

I've been thinking a lot lately... What happens after life? I know we continue to exist, but how? Forever in a paradise? Do we have another life? Or cease to exist? As far as constant reincarnation, after 'forever' that would suck. So would living forever in "Heaven" who wants to live forever? But then, who also wants to cease to exist? I've gotten myself pretty depressed over this... What do you guys think?

Well one way or another you are going to have to come to grips with the end. - As we know it.
"The thought of death is more scary than death itself" Who lived to tell that one??
Well if you believe in heaven I don't think God would create eternity to exist with boredom. Possibly no concept? Who knows?

If you believe you will just die and turn into dirt then you should find a way to come to terms with that, otherwise it will make the limited time you do have a miserable time of worry.

Reincarnation? As another sentient being? If you are living on as a flower I don't think you will think much about it.

      No you don't.

Once you learn to accept that, you can stop thinking about death subjectively. From my perspective, I have to assume there is no afterlife. Not counting on an afterlife is the only way to look at life as the most important thing you will ever experience.

See this film for one theory.
Another theory is that whatever you wish is exactly what happens.
And yet another theory is that... blah... blah... blah...
      etc.

There is interesting point, though, that one writer once made: if you're not happy in this life, why should you be in the next?

I guess it's more useful to spend some time thinking about that than simply wondering what will happen. Although that very same question constantly hammers in my head as well. Meh, maybe it's a good thing.

But as the second poster already said - we'll all find out sooner or later. Patience.

If we cease to exist, we won't be able to think and complain about it would we? So we couldn't ever be bored. Think of it that way.

      Scientifically...

The universe will implode. The Big Bang will happen again, and we will live another life, only to think about "is death the end?".

I've come to believe that existence only has two possibilities: Infinity or nothing, and because we are here, that eliminates nothing.

Couldn't it be possible though to destroy all that exists, creating nothing?

But from nothing is where something came from (if the "initial" Big Bang really did just come out of nowhere).

Maybe there are just cycles, of nothing and something. Either way, it's irrelevant to us.

How can you come to terms with something so... Melancholy. Besides, I know there's life after death, so that's not what worries me. What worries me is what happens after that. Maybe it's a mix of both? Live on after death, then cease to exist completely after a while.

That is a really trippy thought.

I once heard a theory that after the next Big Bang, the universe will unfold exactly as it did with our Big Bang, creating the exact same chain of events. All atoms and elements would follow the same path. "Time" would repeat itself. Every event that has happened will happen again, and has happened god knows how many times.

Because there is probably a finite amount of "matter" (in the form of energy) that was confined to one gravitational mass, this is a highly plausible theory. The exact same mass going through the exact same reaction (big bang) would have the exact results.

      Maybe your actions are predetermined.

That's actually an encouraging thought to do something with your life. If you are going to live the same thing over and over again, better damn make sure it's a good life that will be lived over and over again.

Don't get depressed over this, you aren't dying and there are no reasons for depressing yourself.
Let's say we die with death, and then we won't care whether we cease to exists or not. So it makes to care to be afraid of it now.
Or we don't die, if you prefer to think so... but if so, only then you'll care whether you'll live forever or not. Because maybe you'll cease to exist instead, then these worries are for nothing!
Such thoughts would make you happy to be alive instead of depressing you.

All I know is, is that from a evolutionary standpoint, a soul seems very unlikely to me, and I don't see any reason why our mind would live on after death. It can't, it's death. Your conscious is a projection of your braincells, nothing more.

An afterlife does sounds all niiiiceee, and sweeeeettt, and happyyyyyy ^___^

but that doesn't make it true.

I'll only say that ceasing to exist is impossible. We simply change into something else. As far as consciousness is concerned, the same thing must apply. If we do not in fact continue as souls (which is very possible) we must simply change into something else.

As said earlier, "nothing" is not possible. It is a human fantasy. Fear of permanent death is absolutely pointless. The universe, or what lies beyond is infinite and you are part of it. There is no escape from it. You may not be flying around calling yourself "Tim", but you will still be part of a greater whole.

Well none of us knows, do we? Those who experience it can never tell us. All we can do is guess. Even an overwhelmingly strong feeling of what happens has no effect on what actually happens.

My personal guess is that we simply cease to exist.

It's very hard for most people to wrap their brain around the idea that they may one day no longer exist. But it really shouldn't be. After all, didn't you once before not exist? Why would it be impossible to go back to that?

I take comfort in knowing that billions of people have died. I will go through exactly the same thing they did, so im not really afraid.

This is always an interesting speculative topic, but there is only one thing that can be concluded without speculating: I don't know, and you don't either.

Take some time to really think about this. I'm serious. As you do, think of everything that has ever happened simply as mollecular interaction. Also understand that the only reason todays events are happening the way they are is because of yesterday's events, the year before's events, and so on and so forth.

An example is the moon. If it werent for the gravitational affect of the moon, life counldnt exist. All because some rock blew apart, and a fragment headed toward Earth and got stuck in our gravity.

Keep going back and back in time, to the big bang, and every event that has ever happened has a common prior event.

I still dont feel like I can put what i mean into words.

There is much written on this topic. I highly suggest reading Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, as he covers this exact theme. It's an easy and very enjoyable read. He puts what you mean very well into words!

Wow, great science to back those claims up there, bob-o. Like the word "to", that was one big chunk of evidence-based proof right there.

To hell with science and proof

If it were proven, there would be no reason to post it, billy-bob.

Why exactly are proven things not worth posting? Some people actually like to learn proven facts.

      *Sigh*

That's what books are for. Opinions were called for...opinions were given.

Yes I love "facts". That is why I read all day. I also like to speculate based on what I know. My reasoning leads me to several possibilities, and several impossibilities. This is called philosophy.
