She worked briefly as a sports reporter for local television before becoming mayor of a town with a population of at the time under 5000. After leaving the town with a debt of $20 million, she became governor of Alaska, the state with the second-smallest population, for just 2 years before being announced as John McCain's running mate.

      Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University with a degree in political science. After four years in New York City working at the Business International Corporation and the New York Public Interest Research Group, he moved to Chicago to work as a community organizer for three years as director of the Developing Communities Project. He then entered Harvard Law School where he became the first black president of the Law Review. Obama graduated magna cum laude three years later. He went on to teach constitutional law at the University of Chicago for twelve years, while also working at a law firm. In 1996 he was elected to the Illinois Senate, and later was nominated for US Senate. He was sworn in as senator in 2005, and announced his candidacy for president in early 2007. He has written 2 books.
