Invisible Children: Child Soldiers of Uganda

I wasn't exactly sure where to put this. This thread is basically for raising awareness. I saw the documentary and wanted to be able to do whatever I could to help. I figured spreading the word could be one way, even though this documentary was made a few years ago and some of you might have heard about it already.

In 2003, a group of boys traveled to Uganda and made a documentary about the Child Soldiers who are abducted by the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army). The war in Uganda has been going on for about 23 years. In the past few years, peace talks have helped, and the number of abductees has decreased, but there's still a whole lot of it going on, and so much more we can do. I would say more about it, but the documentary tells it all. The documentary: "Invisible Children: Rough Cut" can be viewed on youtube. Anything you decide you can do will help. Hopefully you won't just shrug this off, even though I'm sure a lot of you will, but this is just heartbreaking. The video is kind of long, and it is in 6 different parts, but it's worth watching if you can help to save someone's life (if you so choose to, that is)

Part 1 (part one doesn't say really anything about the situation in Uganda, it's basically just the intro)
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qds5MQCqWnk

      Part 2
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viEMF...eature=related

      part 3
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ped1...eature=related

      part 4
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnqAd...eature=related

      part 5
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai9FK...eature=related

Part 6 (this part was so sad)
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJnYc...eature=related

they sell bracelets, T-shirts, Scarves, and other merchendise online if you want to donate any money (they're expensive but 100% of the money goes to the Ugandan Children for schools or helping to end the war, etc.)

      More information at invisiblechildren.com

Please do something guys, your sympathy is worth nothing if all you do is say "oh this is so sad" and then go about your life without helping.

I'm getting bored of shit going on at the other end of the world, i almost don't care anymore. This will never stop, so who cares what we do? it's a failure either way because we are human beings. You stop some, not all, then some other person continues it. None of this will stop, ever, so get used to it.

edit- Also, people need to stop shoving this shit in our face. I'm almost sick of the "help a starving kid" thing, make you feel sorry and hand out some money and they give out next to nothing because almost all the money goes to the company, instead of helping the children. My sister did this, and for years they never stopped harassing.

no one wants to be mature about this? the point of it isn't to make you feel good about yourself, and it's not like you have to do much of anything on your part.

The point is to realize that it's ALL about making yourself feel good, hence my original comment that no one gives a shit, although some may think they do without doing some real introspection.

Charity is all about empathy, knowing people feel bad makes in turn you feel bad or guilty. By helping others, people feel like they've done their part.

      But buying cheap merchandising? Really?

Throwing a few coins and pretending everything is alright is a bit hypocritical imo. If I honestly cared about this, I would donate as much money as I could every month, but even then, it wouldn't make me feel much better because the cause of the problem would still be there.

I can't be the direct solution to the problem. Therefore, I won't even lift a finger. Who gives a shit that I'm perfectly capable to ease the suffering of a few when hundreds more cry out in anguish? It's either stop all of the suffering, or nothing.

Yes, buying a tshirt, seems like the right thing to do. After all, it's not like you could afford to give about 10% of your income every month to charity.

I'd like to see you win the lottery and donate 100% of the prize to poor kids.

But please, do continue with the pretend-altruism game.
