Hawaii and be a bum or Buffalo and be independant?

My mom got a 10 month job offer in Hawaii, from mid July(09)-mid May(10).

The option will probably be open to go with her, however if I do go I'll probably just be a bum there the whole time, partying and camping and shit, not working much(if at all).

So should I go with her and slack off for 10 months or continue working on getting my own apartment and degree by staying up here in Buffalo?

I really want to finally become fully independent cause I'm sick of mooching off my mom, but this is a chance to go to fucking Hawaii, essentially on vacation for 10 months.

      :peace:

Tough one!!! How old are you? Do you know which island?
If it's to O'ahu (sp) Honnolulu (sp) I would stay in NY. That island is WAY too crowded and touristy.
If it's to the "Big Island", or Kaui (sp) or Maui I would probably go with her. Those islands are awsome. And there's always the possibility you *could* get a job there. If not... is there a likely chance you'll ever be able to go in the future? If not, I would definitely go.
But... do you have any promising job opportunities where you are now?

When you work for a degree etc you're just working towards a situation where you can be able to bum safely.

Here you can bum right away

I still don't understand why independence isn't an option in hawaii...

      Same as Xaq.
Maybe it's time to get to work on those transfer apps?
Having just been to Hawaii for two weeks, part of me says go. The other part says, you're working on a degree. Presumably, with such an education comes the ability to visit Hawaii later in life with money and friends. To throw that away so that you can be a bum for exactly ten months seems very stupid. Especially considering the number of homeless people in the islands.

I say either go, but continue with the degree and/or find work. OR, I'm sure there is a point in time in the next ten months when you can go spend some time over there. IE the summer.

I dunno I'm thinking long term. Bumming it is nice and all but over a month of touring the islands and experiencing everything, that just seems like it would hurt more than help you. Especially if you're in school right now.

It all depends. If you're out of oppertunities and out of Inspiration in Buffalo, going to Hawaii might do you good and inspire you spiritualy. In Hawaii you'd meet alot of new people, alot of new oppertunities will cross your path, who knows you find the love of your life their, who knows you'll find the occupation of your life: your calling there in Hawaii. And if you go and run into a Japanese/Chinese girl named Toshi in Hawaii, tell her Allon said hi!

Hawaii would appeal very much to me as does the general idea of "going elsewhere" to escape monotony. I think if you don't go you're going to regret it big time.

As long as your mom doesn't mind, I would go for it. Long term 10 months isn't going to really matter in terms of getting a degree. Of course if you have like no money or anything, being a bum there might not be as much fun.

Though you could always bum around for a month or two, get a temporary or part time job and still go out and do fun stuff.

Of course another options is you could stay where you are, and go out to visit her at some point in time. I mean you have a free place to stay and a reason to go. So going for a few week vacation is always possible.

Hawaii is actually in the process of shipping a lot of "bums" back to the mainland US, who once had the same ideas as you have. They thought that it would be cool to just 'live off the land,' there in Hawaii, and found it no less peril-some as living on the streets of any mainland city. So the state is shipping them back, en masse.

Think it over, seriously, before you really commit to anything.

That being said...it's fucking Hawaii, so I'm partially tempted to try it, myself. LOL.

      [Edit:]
I just looked back over your OP, and it seems that you were talking about just being there for about 10 months and being a bum, not just going over there and seeing if you can start out as a bum and make something of yourself, afterward.

Hell, if you've got an out, in 10 months, I say do it!

I'm 19, I'll be 20 in September. No and no. I haven't been able to find a job in Buffalo since July of 2007.

The cost I guess. The cost of living is way higher there. Coupled with the fact that I don't have the apartment options as I do here(read: Friends ready to get one with me) it would be pretty hard to get an apartment.

Yeah as I said before I've run of opportunities here. No jobs, no real possibilities for my chosen career.
I want to get into film/TV production. Hawaii has way more outlets for media than Buffalo.
I really think the change of environment would be great too. I've been in a (sort of) self induced rut in my life. Maybe this'll shake it up enough to change my attitude for good.

      Dude....

IT'S FUCKING HAWAII! Just think of how awesome Hawaii is and there's no question about it. If you're only going to b- *in the middle of that sentence I scrolled down and read Oneironaut's post*

      I agree with Oneironaut.

You are already talking about bumming around in Hawaii.

      Here is your best option.

Move to Hawaii with your mother. Once you are there, spend a week or two finding the best place to do some long term camping. Get a job using your mother's address as your place of residence. Live in a tent and visit your mom regularly to shower. This way, you get your independence, no rent, make money, and aren't completely on your own/have a support net when you need a break from the rustic lifestyle.

The ability to happily respond to any adversity is the divine.

Elis I thought you were way older!

I guess I agree with O's post as well.

In my opinion the hardest part about being a bum for 10 months is getting off your ass and making something of your life once the 10 months are over. I mean I had a hard time going back to school after 3 month summer vacations... I couldn't imagine going back to something after 10 months. I think I'd be too set in my bum-like ways.

On the contrary, Mes, after a whole lot of bumming about I personally feel more revved up to go back to school and do good.

It's a difference of personality in this case.

I'm sure you know yourself better than we do, Elis, so you'd know how hard or easy you'd find it to get back into a busy life style after an extended break.

I've found that time off from school and working menial jobs has given me the motivation necessary to do really well in school when I go back.

After I graduated high school, I was told if you took a year off to find out where you wanted to go to college, what you wanted to there - chances were that you would not want to go back to school. Not sure the same applies here, but I was in Puerto Rico over winter break (a month span) and I wasn't too stoked about coming back for my final semester. But the final semester it is, finally.
