      Reoccurring Themes

Everyone has heard or has had reoccurring dreams. How many here constantly experience reoccurring themes? The dream itself will be different, but still continuously experience the same situations over and over again. For example one I keep dreaming about is having bad Brakes on my car.

Whenever I am driving my car will have very bad brakes. When I see a road I want to turn down, I'll apply the brakes but my car won't even slow down. I just hear the rubbing of metal against metal. Other times I'll be on a hill and my car will start rolling back. Even though I have my break pedal to the floor, my car will continue to accelerate as I roll down the hill and I will be swerving to avoid hitting things behind me. Now In real life, a situation like this would be deathly terrifying. However when these happen in the dreams, I see it as if its nothing more then a mild inconvenience.

I don't know why I always dream of have 'bad brakes' every time I am in a car. I never had my brakes go on me nor have I ever driven a car with such bad brakes. When my brakes start to go bad, It takes me less than an hour to replace them. Its nothing I fear either - like I don't worry about my brakes going on my while I am driving down the road. SO I really don't know why I keep having this happen in my dreams.

Another that always happens in my dreams is trying to call someone but not being able to properly dial the number. I'll keep hitting the wrong buttons and so fourth.

Anyone else have the same things continuously happen in their dreams?

Nice idea for a thread Tebok!

The most common reoccuring theme for me is probably trying to get somewhere and never being able to get there or it taking forever. Like I'll be getting ready to go to the beach but everytime I think i'm ready to go I'll remember something I need to pack or a family member will have to do something. These dreams are always really aggrivating, you just want to go to the beach or whatever place you're going but the dream just won't let you. It's also kind of annyoing in waking life, since usually it's a fun place i'm going and it would have been nice to dream about.

I'll have to check through my dream journal for some more reoccuring themes.

Isn't this pretty much what dream signs are? Reocurring things/themes/scenarios?

Back when I was in school I dreamt a lot of teachers pulling unfair shit. Like seriously. I remember a dream when we were on some kind of field trip. Part of it was going on a ship to an island. On the way back my teacher told us that we had to swim back to land in order to get home. I thought that was absolutely retarded but the teacher acted like it was the most normal thing in the world and just shouted me out.

I also had a lot of dreams about all sorts of misunderstandings. Like people misunderstanding what I say/intend to do and getting very angry. For years that was an extremely common theme in my dreams.

Recently I seem to have a lot of dreams set in either hotels or forests and I have no idea why.
And my best friend who I know pretty much since birth is appearing in tons of dreams. There is no other person appearing in my dreams than him.

Yup, I get those a lot too as well as having trouble doing something as simple as getting dressed.

      Hello Tebok!

I honestly don't recall not one reoccurring dream so far. If I'd have one though, I would think like this: - there is something going on in my life that I either: ignore, am not being aware of or neglect and is causing me problems or bugging me. Either is something or somebody in my life, or my own way of behavior that needs to be changed. If the dream is repeating, I would assume it is really one deeply rooted problem/thought in my subconscious mind that I am failing to see or acknowledge in daily life. The dream will repeat itself until I became aware (or on trace of it) of what is going on in that repeating dream and try to apply it in my own life.

Usually when I would have dreams about a certain vehicle it would point out to having a control over my life or something particular in my life.
      1. Type of the vehicle - Vehicle (if you are inside it) usually represents some situation or relationship in your life. Is it a bus (more public life), car (more intimate circle of life, or it depends what the car means to you - you can have special emotions for your car for whatever the reason or you can look on it like on a simple object that you are using to reach your daily goals/tasks..etc..), motorcycle - very personal, horse - something primal...etc. Determine your own relation with the car in general and in your dream. Write down anything you observe about the car in your dream - color, shape, how does it makes you feel?
      2. Control over vehicle - Are you driving it or someone else, points out on who is in control? In the car in your dream, you are the one in control, oh but you are not! cause something is broken - It can point out to something in your life being out of control, you are trying to gain control but it is not up to your skill. It is about mending. Something is broken and it has to be fixed so that you can gain control again.
      3. Take surroundings into consideration - what kind of place is where you are riding, how does it make you feel, where are you going etc.

Think about all three numbers maybe you will gain more awareness of your dream and why it is repeating.

I will give you really brief examples of my vehicle dreams and how did I interpret it (based on what really happened in reality)

Riding in a bus (relationship with my ex which was somehow more public then personal, didn't like it )- older man (my ex boyfriend) is driving it (in control, dominant) , we crashed cause he was driving to crazy and to fast not taking my advices into consideration. I opened the bus and it started filling with slimy, dirty, smelly, green water in which it was drowning... etc.

Frozen in a car - me and my ex, sitting on a back seat of the car, non of us is driving (we are not in control of the relationship any more), driving through a dark, snowy, un-known place (uncertainty of where we are), out of coldness car stops in the middle of that dark road, I could just feel everything started freezing - I took his hand, like for the last time cause I knew we are going to die, slowly I felt how I am freezing from my feet up, cold is taking my breath and then it all gone dark... Month after we broke up. (after 6 years)

Riding a horse - when I got my diploma, finished faculty I felt this great freedom and I dreamt that I for the first time I got my own horse to ride - I felt so proud, couldn't believe that I have my own horse finally, now we are going into adventures together. I was slightly uncertain sitting on it, without the saddle, that I might fall but the horse was helping me with his body.

So maybe some of these examples will help you figure out your own dream even a little bit!

Oh, now that I am thinking I do have some object or actions repeating in my dreams, like the one you've mentioned - trying to call someone on the phone but however I try to dial the nuber I simply can't succeed; I'm either hitting the wrong buttons or the person is unavalable. In all of the cases I dreamt of this, the person I am trying to call/reach is someone in my life that I am trying to reach/make contact with on emotional level and I feel we are not conected.

      This topic is hella cool.

My general recurring themes are a bit abstract. I often dream of existential subjects and settings in which it's less a dream and more a world or a world between worlds. My dreams also often incorporate something to do with beyond death, usually in the form of something like an afterlife, but also involving more existential subjects. For example, I've had dreams of being in multiple afterlives, but I've also had dreams of creatures coming into my dream, because the dream they previously had been in had "died" as the dreamer woke up, and they desperately didn't want to die and so settled into my dream (despite this being a futile effort, for I too would wake up eventually). I've also had dreams of people asking me to wake up, or to remember them when I woke up, with implications that when I wake up the dream I had and the people I met will cease to exist. I'm unsure what any of this means, though. Maybe I just think strange things.

Most importantly I suppose I have a recurring dream character, who also ties into the whole existential subjects and settings in which the setting is a dream but also not a dream at the same time. He has a name, but it's unpronounceable in human tongue and so I just call him the Kind Man. I'm unsure what he's supposed to represent, though there are some theories of those who know me well who say that he may be my "death drive" or the part of me that encourages me to fall deeper into my self.

I don't keep a dream log but I do keep a list of recurring dreams. I started a few years ago when I remembered three and didn't want to forget them. Since then I've been adding to the list. I never would have guessed I had so many if I wasn't keeping the list. I think most of the dreams are on paper and it's hard to find right now, but I added the latest three to a text file on my computer:

      • have to bring home everything from school before end of school
      • riding in a vehicle feeling like I'm almost falling off
      • have to walk home from coney island

There was another that I thought I'd remember to write down when I got a chance but I forgot. It was one I just barely remembered being recurring. It may be years until I add it to the list, if ever.

Oh, and one from the paper list is about not being able to get to my apartment (often from the elevator missing my floor). Also levitating/flying, and my building starting to fall down. I'll probably find the full list eventually.
