I suspect picturing 2D animated characters in a 3D world likely is a lot more tricky than it may sound. Doing it for a still image might be simple enough, but it's hard to imagine how it should work when throwing in things like perspective, walking around the scene, binocular vision, etc. The best I can do is just visualize the overall idea, but it's difficult to figure out details (though I've always suspected my visualization ability is a bit weak, which makes this difficult anyway).
I've had this type of dream on a few valuable occasions (would like to have it happen much more often but have never managed to have much luck yet), even once or twice in LDs, but even when I tried to pay attention to details during the dreams, I still have a hard time trying to remember precisely how the “2D-on-3D” projection actually worked when I later woke.
