I only started keeping a dream journal 4 days ago. Last night I had a Lucid, I don't know if there's a connection between the two tho. There still quite good to do so you can look back on your dreams, study them for similarities to look for signs etc.

I try to do a list of pros and contras Dreamjournal.
I think it's almost everybody in here who's keeping a DJ. Except maybe a few naturals who are able to LD anyway and without it.

      Pro DJ:
      • If you reread your DJ (=Dreamjournal, btw.) after a few weeks you'll probably find things that occur more frequently than others (=Dreamsigns) which you won't necessarily find if you don't keep one.
      • If you don't write things down in the morning you could maybe remember all of it for a few minutes. Half of it during the day but a few days later you'll only remember the strongest, happiest, most frightening parts of some dreams but without the context
      • Even the most vivid LD begins to fade if you don't write it down. I mean maybe you remember that you flew to the moon with superspeed but the small details or the connection between scenes will be lost (maybe forever)
      • And in addition, it's very funny to realize how the world has affected your subconsciousness by rereading your entries.

      Contra DJ:
      • It's, especially in the beginning, not easy to keep a DJ routinely.
      • If you wanna make it faithfully, you need a lot of time. Either you write down everything in detail as soon as you wake up, or you make just a few notes in order to write it down completely during the day.

Hm, maybe I haven't hit your question but anyway, for what good would you not keep a DJ? If you want to LD regularly a DJ is a must, except you are a natural...

Current Top 3 LD tasks (see all):
      [X] have an LD
[_] summon yoda who teaches me how to use the Force and lightsabres on it now
[_] meet the main characters of my fantasystory on it now

I find it much easier to remember my dreams by telling somebody my dream when I wake up rather than writing it down. I can talk much more fluently than I can write right after I wake up. Although, I may start a voice-recorded DJ so I can transcribe it into an online journal.

I keep a dream journal, find it useful and very valuable tool. I write dreams down in the morning, then transfer most of them into my online dream journal here.

I tend to either keep one here or in real life. I don't really do both. I must though, in fact I'll start next dream I remember or something.
