Any ex-smokers lit up in a dream?

I have been offa the ciggies now for almost 3 years (give or take a little). I think I'm finally over the hump, as it were, in that I'm not "counting the seconds" anymore (at first it was like "I haven't had a smoke in 1 yr. 2 mos. 3 days 6 hrs. & 27 seconds".. etc.) and I still sorta craved 'em too. I'd catch a whiff and be all drooling. Now it just smells like crap to me, finally.

So, when I was quitting I was of the opinion that once I "mastered" lucidity (what a maroon, huh?) that I'd just smoke all night every night - to "scratch the itch" if you will. Well it only really happened once, very near to when I started to quit, (non-lucid) only I woke up all feeling guilty and ashamed, like I had "slipped" for real. Can't for the life of me remember what it tasted like or anything like that.

So... short story long, it happened again last night. I dreamt (non-lucidly) that I was dead-heading (driving an empty, out of service bus) somewhere and smoking away like a madman. I was REALLY enjoying this one too. Still can't remember what it tasted like, but I knew for sure I was liking it a lot. It is still on my lucid to-do list, I still want to see what it's like when I'm aware.
Also, GOTTA smoke a doob too. Just to see what being high in a dream is like.

Just curious, any other dreamsmokers out there? Please share your experience(s). Tobacco or otherwise.

      smooches,
      » Phy³

I've smoked in nonlucids before. In fact, I did about 4 nights ago. it was a very hazy dream, so it kept fading in and out, but I've been trying to quit for a while. I have only gone 2 days without a smoke on this attempt. The longest I've gone is 3 weeks, sadly. How did you manage to do it? I was thinking maybe smoking a cigarette in a lucid dream would help. I haven't remembered to try it yet.

Well.. I smoked about a pack-and-a-half a day for almost 20 yrs. so quitting for me was NOT easy, by any stretch. I started with "the patch" on my own schedule (which the package strictly says not to do) I did the first stage for 2 wks. (rec'd 6 wks.) then the stage 2 for 2 wks. then finally the third stage for 2 wks. (total of 6 wks. instead of 10). Then after the patches I vowed never to smoke another "cigarette" so long as I lived. (Again, not easy!). Then I started rolling my own, a-la European style, I was smoking approx. 1 ciggie worth of tobacco per day in 3 rollies. I did that until I just plain got sick & tired of all the bullshit of rolling the fucking things. Took about 6 mos.-ish. Then I just stopped. Haven't looked back. It's been almost 3 yrs. now without ANY tobacco at all. I can't say I never get a craving, but they are a LOT less intense now and instead of causing anxiety they almost (I said "almost" now) amuse me.

For me now it has everything to do with wondering why so god-damn many people want to put money in the tobacco execs' pockets? Poor bastards.. they need more of your hard-earned money, don't they? You NEEED to pay them to fucking kill you faster... how fucking fuktup is THAT?!

PEOPLE! stop being a slave to deadly fucking niccotine!
      (gets off his soap-box now)

Yeah, it happens to me all the time. Sometimes in the dream I feel really bad about starting up again, but I keep smoking anyway. I have been trying to use it as a dreamsign, but I have not ever gotten lucid because of it yet.

Me too; I underline it in my journal because it's a dream-sign for me. I quit a really long time ago. I haven't gotten lucid from it yet either, but I should--maybe this post will help me remember to.

Phydeaux, congratulations on quitting; it's the hardest thing in the world to do, especially when you get older, I think. (Not that you're old, I just mean older than teen-20's).

I got the same idea as you, but for everyone--I think everyone should roll their own, that would really cut down on the number of people smoking.

Yeah! A dream sign!! "If I am smoking then I MUST be dreaming" just gotta keep on repeating that ad nauseum. I was reading more accounts of dreaming smokers who had quit, apparently it really shakes some of them up. They get really upset about the fact that they've slipped, one woman said she woke up crying. Anyone who's given up this disease/habit knows exactly how hard it is AND exactly how frustrating it would be to think that you'd lost the battle yet again. For those of us who (touch wood now) have won the war, there's still no guarantee that you won't have a bad day and fall off the wagon again anytime. I think ya gotta learn to just hate it. Hate it to death. So maybe dream-smoking isn't all that great of an idea afterall. Still I'm gonna try it when I get better at being lucid. Hopefully I'll just say "blech!" and toss it, but I suspect it'll be like the one I had the night before last and still be delicious.

Hopefully the anger and disappointment that you feel in the dream will carry over IRL, and it will be one of those dreams where you wake up relieved that it was only a dream, and also be more determined than ever not to smoke.

      One day at a time.

I quit smoking in 1986, and still find myself smoking in dreams from time to time - sometimes knowing I've "blown it", and other times without remembering I have ever quit.

I quit drinking and using even earlier than that, and still find myself drinking and smoking dope in my dreams from time to time.

      Better there than IRL.

I'm a current smoker so this doesn't really apply to me but I'll reply anyway. I have dreams about smoking pretty frequently, but a few months ago I participated in a smoking study in which I had to quit for 2 weeks. If I smoked, I would lose money and several nights during those two weeks I dreamed that I had lit up without even thinking about it and didn't realize until it was too late. I would still feel ashamed for a few minutes after waking until my mind would clear and I'd realize I hadn't really done it.

For 40 years I was a pot smoker, & always enjoyed my tokes. However I have quit the habit, mostly to please my husband, but also because it was wreaking hell with my sinuses. I don't miss the weed like I thought I would, & when awake I never even think of having a toke. Recently however, I have been regularly getting high in my dreams. Guess that's a lot healthier way to do it, & it won't aggravate my hubby either!
