Have a question about sleep or dream science? Ask me...

Hey all. I'm relatively new to this forum but certainly not to sleep science. I work for a sleep medicine and research firm as a polysomnologist (sleep technologist) so I'll be happy to answer any question you have, simple or crazy, about sleep and dreams. I love this field and I feel the best way to become a life long student is to be a teacher first and foremost!

      Oh cool!
I have a question about some things I've heard and don't know if they are true.

About naps, is it true that you skip all the sleep stages and go directly to REM? Or is this just a mistake made by associating REM with dreams, which can also happen douring non-REM sleep (right?).

      Thanks!

Do you think we could dream even with out the REM's?

I am sure I can, but I would like to hear what you got to say..

If you're taking a real nap, as in you have already slept a normal period of time prior to that nap, then your body/mind does not require you to run through the traditional sleep architecture wherein you must have Stage 2 and Delta sleep prior to REM.

Think about when you sleep in on a Sunday or whenever and you get more than 8 hours of sleep. Past that time you can really only have Stage 1 (very light sleep) or REM, though these dreams usually don't last as long or as stable as those you would have during REM-5 (the last 90min of a regular sleep cycle).

Yes, that's called tonic REM. Phasic REM is characterized by actual rapid eye movement whereas tonic REM lacks any eye movement though both have a quality of perceptive conscious of dream activity.

It is thought that phasic REM has a more active dreamscape to acompany the eye movements, though occular activity and an active dream environment are not mutually exclusive.
