Dreaming up Strangers

I had a dream recently where some people had fixed my car and brought it to me. I got good looks at their faces and I had never seen any of them. Yet they were perfectly formed people, people who I could see in everyday life. I They had no names, I can't remember their voices, but I remember some faces. Are these people our mind forms, just our imagination? Like writing a novel, and giving birth to characters in it. Or are they fragments of actual memories of real people used in making a character? Or maybe they're even real people we don't remember?
