Memory footprints while conscious

Hey everyone. I just have a simple question that came to me when a friend was explaining an interesting situation he experienced while high (weed). He claimed to have seen images randomly when closing his eyes for a dew moments....but that he has a weird feeling that he's seen the images somewhere before, but he doesn't recall actually ever seeing them. These were abstract images (like lines, or shapes with color), so they're definitely something the brain conjured up. The reason I'm pitting this in the dream section is that, to me, this sounds a bit similar to experiencing memory footprints on thethreshold of a dream. Is it possible to experience these footprints while conscious?

Well.....he might have just been baked out of his mind and thought that he's seen them somewhere before.
