I actually know someone who dreams almost exclusively in that way. I too experience something similar every once in awhile, and have read accounts of members on the forum who have as well. It's definitely not super common, but it happens enough to put it out of the 'uncommon' classification. So, is it normal? It really depends on the person, but, overall, it isn't unheard of.

Other than that, good luck on getting your first LD!

Quite often, I am not myself in dreams. The character I control looks, sounds, acts differently than I do or would.

Is this what you mean or something else?

If this is not what you're referring to, then you might be experiencing third-person views? As if you're a camera, and not a real person.

One time, when I was meditating (I don't meditate all that often, twice a month at best), I had a mini-dream of sorts were it seemed like it all had absolutely nothing to do with me. I don't remember the exact details, but it was some scenario with people I've never met, in a place I've never seen. I remember the person who my point of view was following (I was just watching it as though it were TV) was some black guy (I am white and live in a place with few black people, I'm not intolerant just thought it is interesting that I followed a person of characteristics that I'm not used to). I don't remember what was going on, but the vision seemed to last about a minute and I think there was some conversation, and the guy was in his house. Seemed very insignificant and I have no idea why this vision came up during meditation, as I wasn't even there...
