Are we weird? haha

Lol! I think one of the hard parts about sites like this is interacting with people who are way younger. I have lots of old-man moments (I'm 29) where I'm just shaking my head at the "girl problems" or "I'm much deeper than the other people in my school because I LD" sorta stuff. On one hand you want to bonk them on the head, but on the other hand I remember that I used to be that way too.

Anyway, as Old Man Torr :cheeky: said, all of that will go away. The "who is weird," the popularity stuff, the cliques. You'll have a job and a place of your own. You'll pay your own bills and do what you like in your time off without worrying about what anyone else thinks. And if you're lucky, you'll have enough sense not to worry about what other people are doing with *their* time off. All the stuff that seemed really important when you are 17 is irrevelant at 27, and mayhaps you'll get to be the old man on a forum shaking your head. :)

well what is weird really ?
i guess not many people lucid dream, or even care about it,
and i just can't fathom why they are so uninterested ?!
being able to live out your wildest dreams.. i guess i've just always been a dreamer in all aspects of my life
i have a few close friends, a girlfriend, and i do dress a certain way.
my gf doesn't care what i wear, or how i look but that's the reason i do what i do
i just like looking my best for her :)

I think it depends on your definition of weird. If you define weird as: "Dissimilar from the zombie like crowd, not caring what others want you to be like, loving life, Earth, and the Universe with every fabric of your being, and learning to do anything you can imagine in a parallel consciousness while you're asleep."- then I am definitely weird. And proud of it.

Stupidity is mans greates crime and incredibly widespread in people my age (even I do it at times) It makes me so angry thats why I do kinda distance myself from other people. I will talk to someone if they talk to me first but mostly I just keep to my close friends

But i understand why someone made this thread though. I was reading "exploring the world of lucid dreaming" and someone came up to me. They asked what i was reading, i told them, then they said "thats gay". My reaction (in my head of course) "Your f****** gay you f****** b****!!"

The general mass of people is like a branless crowd, all similar, all dressing the same, all listening to the same music, all thinking htey are unique and individual but they are not!! (here I go again, velzhaed) They are the same. Reread my previous posts in this thread and you will find a few examples of this. The point is, (again) that the weird ones are the notable ones and the normal ones don't do anything. I am getting a little angry at this stupidity that I face every day in my school with the cliques and the fashion and etc. It's POINTLESS. I cannot wait to get out of high school. I am not one of those people whose lives are miserable in hs, but I don't like it. All you guys, you dont need to have nice clothes, cool friends and all this crap. All you need is IT. The thing that makes a lot of people enjoy being around you. Some are just good at making others feel comfortable. As I said: Dont accept being weird. At least not in HS. You have to fit in, even if you dont want to, otherwise youle just be miserable. I feel like im talking to all the reject people from my school right now. Its not okay to wait it out, unless you enjoy it (which im sure you dont). Im not a popular guy, but I have a regular amount of friends, enough to be comfortable. And im a very decent LDer anyway. You know what I think? I think people that just keep their 3-4 best friends and hang around just with them are lazy. Yeah, lazy. I mean, you should at least know all your class. Stop finding excuses and socialize! Its not true that you cant get into a "gang" right in the middle. Hell, im sure a lot of people would be happy to welcome you in :D

Well thank you for the compliment! Yeah....I can't stand that "emotionless" expression thing that the kids do. It's like the "too cool to care" face. Of course if they really didn't care they wouldn't take the time to put on a face at all, would they? The people who truly don't care, wouldn't even notice if you looked at them or not.

I think everyone cares what other people think, including myself. I just am old enough to know that you are NOT what you wear, or what you stick on your body. You are the sum of your deeds and you are measured not by how many people are impressed with the clothes that your parents paid for. I think the real challenge for young people is to use your personality and your outward actions to make people think you are cool. Everything else is just window dressing, and will only impress those whose opinions are pretty much worthless anyway.

I'm not sure that being "quirky" is the answer either. That's just another uniform isn't it? That's a question not a statement. I know that my stepson used to go out of his way to say dumb "random" things as he called them. All it did was make people think he was "weird" and that's not the same as being "GOOD" or even "COOL". Here's where my age shows....I'm not sure it's even possible for a teenager to be "COOL" by my definition since most (if not all) of them have not experienced enough in life to make them cool yet. Living in your parents house eating their food, and wearing the clothes they buy you is NOT cool by any standards that I know of. This isn't your fault...it's just true. So how cool could a teen possibly be...really? Ok, you can have a cool attitude I guess..and you can be cool in how you treat other people with respect. That's pretty much my definition of "COOL" anyway. Ok...so maybe teens can be cool. I stand corrected.

When I was in HS I felt invisible at school, and it was only outside of HS where I met the girls I dated. I met them at work, and not at school. The girls in my HS were stuck up snobby wealthy kids, who cared more about fashion than about anything I could possibly say or do with them. The funniest thing is that later in life, I connected via Facebook with many of them....and they had not changed at all. Still arrogant, self centered. Some things never change I guess.

I find that Motley and Ray23 have hit the nail right on the head. I feel the exact same way.
I couldn't give a crack what other people think about me, so long as they're not in my face about it! Although I do make an effort to look nice and act friendly to everyone during the day (I have some sense of wanting to look good to other people), I still don't care that much.

I'm way too lazy to read the whole thread, so I just read this last page =P But yeah, as people before have mentioned, it depends on what you mean with "weird". I attend a high school with a varied mass of students, and so far I've yet to meet anyone "normal". The people who seem most normal are the ones who try the hardest to fit in, sort of the 'average' people that try to climb socially. The ones higher up couldn't give less of a damn if people think they're weird as they're the most popular ones in school anyway, the lower down couldn't care less because they accept their social status and the clique they're in.

As for me, I'm sort of average, I guess. I used to be higher up, but all the drama and rivalry between the girls in "Fab Four" and their cronies (I'm not kidding you, they actually call themselves 'Fab Four') was too damn tiring. After just a month in HS and hearing endless shit-talking days on end, I withdrew from their clique. Besides, I've realized they're much nicer to be with and less prone to backstabbing you when they aren't afraid you're going to steal their crown.

But were they 'normal'? Uh, hardly. We're talking about the social queens of the school, people. The only ones who were considered remotely 'normal' were their entourage, who were trying so hard to fit in you could tell they were only putting up a facade. As for me, I'm definitely considered weird. It either annoys people or amuses them, most often the latter than the former. My randomness is notorious among my friends.

As for the whole being-interested-in-LDs aspect of this whole debate, it depends on who you talk to. My school is sort of divided into four different 'programs': science, social science, international students and 'special business program'. (And don't let the last name trick you: it may have the nicest name, but it's the worst program -- the people there are known for being morons who barely passed junior high...)

Science students, regardless of their social status, are quite interested in the whole LD thing, same goes for international students (aka the geeks of the school). I once spent a lunch break debating with a science student who's considered the prince of the school (however much of a sleazy jackass he may be, he's still drop-dead gorgeous and a genius) about the psychological benefits of LD:ing being scientifically proven or not. Social science students have a more "huh, okay" reaction to LD:ing, and the 'special business' students... well, they just go, "LD? Dude, you mean STD." (True story...)

And oh, all my friends and family know all about my dreams :cheeky:

Wow, this turned out to be quite the rant. I guess this is what happens when a chatterbox gets sick, loses their voice and has to stay home for an entire day alone...

All i hear when reading this is. If there is a reason why you dont fit in, than... change it. Thats retarded. If im doing domething that is making people not wanting to be around me than whats wrong with that? If i enjoy it than im happy.

Its not about changing yourself. Its about adapting to the situation. You dont need to talk about your penis and smoke weed to fit in HS.
Listen to this: Im almost sure theres another LDer in my school. After all, we are 1000.Will I ever find him/her? No. Because I do not have the nuts to talk about lucid dreaming to anyone yet. If you would ask that very guy to guess who the other dreamer is (assuming he knows me), I can guarantee he would never get it. The same way, by not taking the time to meet others you are keeping yourself away from other human beings who are just as cultivated as you. Everyone is wearing a cover. Most people in HS are very ordinary, which you must not confound with stupidity. But once you talk 1 on 1 and take out the "group" aspect, you can discover a lot about a person. Being an introvert, to me, is a person that is comfortable being alone. Does that mean he likes being alone? No, because thats impossible. Once again, you must not confound things. What an introvert enjoys is not loneliness, but stability. And sometimes, breaking that stability can be a very good thing. There's another guy just like you right now dying to know you :D

I agree with most of what you said. BUT. Why should i adapt? Im alot like mot. I have many people who i talk to. But only like 3 that i hang with. An i think thats okay. What i really like about what you said was taking the group aspect away from the individual. I talked a little to this guy. One that i normally wouldnt like. (big pot smoker. And im not talking about that person who smokes pot, im talking about the person going around bragging about it) After a couple weeks of talking to him i learned that his mom was a big drunk and takes all of his earnings to go out and party. Now i look at him like a person that is actually kind of cool. I dont look at people as differient clics. I honestly dont think that we even have cliqs. wannabies of course but not really any hardcore jock prep emo thing.
Call me rude but generally i hate people that are around my age, there all immature. (im not saying that im not immature,) I like adults. Thats who i always try and hang with. The three or four people that i hang with (my age) are people who i actually think are amazing people. I never stop laughing and having fun when im around them. And im not going to hide my "hobbie" just so people think i fit in.

I have first lunch and there are literally like 5 people in my grade that go to first lunch as well. of which only one i actualy hang out with. When there not there i generally freak out. I dont like the thought that im going to sit alone. So i normally sit with aquantices. Which i really dont like doing.

Many times, I admire people like you. Those that can ignore the imminent pressure around us. I honestly dont understand how you do it.

For an instance, I have been having difficulty making friends in my school bus. After a week, I was going FREAKIN CRAZY. Hearing tons of conversations around me and not being a part of them just made me feel so uncomfortable and worthless. Its like noone cares about your presence, and you are forced to hear them ignore you. When I went to eat with my usual gang from last year, I sat with them once. I was suddenly crushed by a huge wave of disgust. I just couldnt sit with them anymore. It was a mixed feeling of guilt and sheer humiliation. I knew I needed a change so I left, and now I sit and hang around with another big group of guys I didnt really know from before. The others went on and did the same. But who did this to me? Why did I suddenly feel like sitting with the same friends was a crime? Judgement from others. Im afraid people will walk by and say: Look at Ray, sitting with his same old friends. Ultimately, the only person actually thinking that was me.

Then again, I am lucky. My school is private, and the presence of stereotypes is virtually inexistent. Girlfriends? Forget it. No one has girlfriends at my school. Its amazing. Its not just me, everyone, boys and girls alike. My best friend, whos at the public school I would be going, says that seeing people making out is common. Were only two years into HS and about two guys I know had very short and pointless relationships with no kisses of course. Thus, the pressure is very low.

Anyway, the hockey game is starting (go les canadiens!)

This is exactly what i think and how I feel. Except for more than 5 people in my grade also have first lunch. I only sit with 2 people though and one of them I dont really like but the other is a foreign exchange student who I wouldnt call a close friend but I enjoy being around her at school. I wouldnt have even talked to her at first though if she didnt come up to me.

I have 3 people who I consider my best friends. Fred and George (that is their real names I swear) and then my girlfriend but she lives in another town.

I would like to describe my experience of how I came to not be bothered by my image and pointless cliques and stitting alone at lunch. It all starts a while back perbably in elementary school.. no even before... when I was around 4 and a half. My family and I moved to america from ukraine. Ukraine is known for the fact that we dislike other countries and other people. My parents always commented about how these americans do this and that wrong. This rubbed off on me majorly and I started putting myself above my peers, and thus isolating myself from them. I was hated. I WAS HATED. My life was in a dark place, because I had no real close friends to rely on and not much social contact. one beautiful day in seventh grade, I started noticing this problem and it had gotten to me and started to really hurt. I had been unhappy for years but it started really hurting. I sought advice from my family, internet, school counsellors about how to reverse my situation. It didn't get to me until about ninth grade or freshman year. I started trying to be more respectfl to people and to be a nicer person. It worked for like a week or two but never really took root. Around here, I may add, was where I figured out this whole problem had to do with my confidence too. I was never really confident. Anyways, I read a russian book that really influenced me in that it talked about confidence, healing, etc alternative stuff but that's a whole different story. Anyways, I started acting more confident and acting more outgoing. Then, I met a very important person to me, who taught me about confidence and self opinion. I started following his example of how he told me about it all and voila, now I am more outgoing and talkable to. I have made more friends, good friends as well. And the best part is, I don't care what people think. I can sit alone at lunch no problem. I am alone at the table and no one else. No problem! And an even better part is, when one of my new friends notices me sitting there, they always come and talk to me.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I thought it may be necessary. So, I am like dako in that I can just sit alone and not care. I have shared LD ing with a few friends. It has reached one. The rest thought it was bs. But still, they are my friends because I can talk to them. And not the superfuous talks.

One friend noted that there are three levels of conversation. The low level is talking about people. The middle level is talking about things. The highest level is about ideas. I think he is right. Try to apply those classifications in your everyday lives, guys and you will see it's true. I will admit. Rarely, but it does happen that I stoop to the lowest level. But oftentimes, I stay at the middle or even top level and that is the way it is with all of the people I hang out with. No exception. I think that is a good description of the type of people we are as opposed to our peers.

I also want to say that I am more mature than my peers, as is dako and I too prefer an older crowd. Maybe not adults all the time (sometimes though) but older people. It's more mature conversation.
