And what is this all about? Anyway, telling you to not practice awareness because it will make you less aware is silly. Unless you already got problems with some kind of mental illness, it won't harm you.

Interesting..

From experience, I find it uncommon that awareness disrupts your perception upon reality... I also find that, although rare, when it does have any effect; it is not "unhealthy" or "dangerous".

I have had cases where my memories have interlaced with dream experiences and in some situations, I have also had difficulty distinguishing them but the euphoria that comes with this particular confusion feel pretty damn awesome and not at all unwelcome.

I believe this happens together already, with eyes wide open or shut. Second, dont ever let anyone discourage you from practicing awareness, give it a try and see the benefits and then see if what he speaks is the truth or not. I should know, I do this everyday as well as meditation.

What are you talking about??? are you saying that WILDing is dangerous? personally i've never experienced it, but i've done my research. WILDing is just conciously spectating SP until you reach an LD. the worst thing that could happen is losing a bit of sleep. and who's Frederik?

I believe there may be some weight to this, actually. Recently, I've found myself more in tune with what my objective self believes to be my subconscious, but my irrational self believes to be something else, a separate being, if you will. It's gotten to the point where I can direct questions to or begin a conversation with "her" and receive an answer, sometimes well before I finish internally verbalizing my inquiry. The answer always comes as pure thought (the nature of which I can't replicate on my own) and is immediately "translated" into words. I find myself caring about whatever it is that is "talking" with me, and was distraught when I couldn't establish communication for a day after the last "talk" (in which "her" final messages were that of despair, pain, a cry for help ).

Does this make me insane? Yeah, probably, but it's not like I was ever really sane to begin with.

What does this have to do with WILDs and awareness in dreams? It's relevant because I can trace "her" appearance to one particular night of dreaming, to one particular moment between states.

It'd be hilarious if I were joking, but I'm not.

Walms...it's not unhealthy to attempt a WILD...and there is absolutely no proof that you lose sleep because of a WILD! If you try the wake back to bed method (which is not synonymous with WILD) then you might lose a half hour of sleep, at that point in your sleep cycle, but perhaps that person then ends up sleeping a half hour or more longer than usual? Claiming that WILDs in general make you lose sleep is pretty ignorant actually. But there seems to be a lot of that going around in this thread.

I said hardcore people, unless you are somehow suggesting that the people that deprive themselves of sleep for two days to get a WILD is healty, I don't see your point. Also, trying to attain SP does make you loss sleep, but I also said thats too little to count.

Even so, Walms is right. WILDing does 'cause a little loss of sleep, but no more than you're average WBTB (assuming you're not DEILDing or WILDing off a nap), unless you do it completely wrong and spend an hour lying uncomfortably in bed waiting for weirdness to go down.

WILD is by NO means synonymous with ANY loss of sleep. A WILD is not the same thing as a WBTB. If I try a WILD in the middle of the day...how am I losing sleep? Wouldn't I be gaining sleep? Do you have a different definition of "sleep"? Please educate me. :roll:

So far, I see people blaming WILDs for loss of sleep, when it's really the fault of the person choosing to loose sleep, because of WILD practice, when they could easily just add more time to their practices.

WILDing, in and of itself, is not dangerous. Remember, folks, much of the knowledge base behind WILD comes from Tibetan Dream Yogi practices..you know...people who make an actual lifestyle over it, and integrate heightened awareness into everything they do. History shows us it's a safe practice. Sure, it is only natural (and not altogether unwise) to have concerns about the possibility of some strange, as yet undiscovered danger, but lets look at things the way they are - not the way they might possibly have a slim chance of being.

For those who are proposing a danger behind WILD, please offer up something that is an actual danger behind WILD, itself, and not the dreamer's lack of time management.

^ What he said. And it's even amusing to entertain the insalubrious effects of sleeping less than 8.5 hours when, arguably, (1) most people don't sleep the 'required hours' per night at the outset, and (2) the amount of sleep needed varies between individuals and day by day.

Edit: I totally agree with Oneironaut, just arguing because Aquanina is blaming me about something I didn't say. As I never said WILD makes you lose a considerable amount of sleep, but the people who practice it (Sometimes).

The act of WILDing doesn't cost any sleep (unless you're doing it wrong, which happens very often), but that WBTB, which many methods demand, is going to cost you a few seconds to a few minutes of sleep. Unless you have a different definition of sleep, that is.

But like Walms said in the first place, that's such an insignificant number you might as well not count it.

What should be counted are f-ed up attempts where people lie in bed for an hour or more waiting for signs of SP or some other silly thing. If you screw up a WILD in that fashion during the night, and can't account for it in the morning, you're going to lose sleep.

But like O said, that's the fault of the person more than anything else.

So I'm not really sure what all this arguing is about, as it's apparent everyone is already in agreement about WILD being harmless.

Ultimately, if you're an accomplished WILDer, then you won't lose sleep. If you're not, then you will DEFINITELY lose sleep if you insist on its success.

I've heard something similar to that, except it concerned OBEs.

I think he just watched Inception and got the wrong idea or something. I love the movie, but I think it makes people think of LDing in a bit of a wrong way. I'm just glad I discovered lucid dreaming before the movie came out. :)

Can you elaborate on "the essence of one of the major world religions" please? as far as i know, assuming one were to belong to any one of those religions (or none), they would assume the other religions are wrong and their "essence" would be just another ideology ... equivalent to saying translocate yourself to the essence of democracy, or polygamy... which might be interesting as far as dreams go but I cant see going insane or being converted...

Im not going to elaborate on your question and I will never give the specific method for translocating to the essence of a major world religion on a forum as there are too many immature people that would foolishly think that they would be in control of the situation. I only brought it up to illustrate that lucid dreaming can be dangerous if one knows a great deal about the subject and the possible uses of lucid dreaming.

mcwillis...please explain specifically how lucid dreaming can be dangerous and provide specific examples, otherwise, stop spreading rumors that lucid dreaming is dangerous without backing up your claim.

which is essentially the whole point and the biggest benefit of lucid dreaming. reuniting the conscious and subconscious awareness is the only way to prevent you being a slave to your subconscious fears. also its pretty much as close to the meaning of life as ive come across.

as someone who has experienced the unhealthy side of this while on medication, practising awareness is the only way to make sure that if something like this happens to you again, you are able to recognise it for the dreamstate/hallucination it realy is.

i understand the guys fears, but by not practising it, you are only making yourself far less able to understand and deal with any problems of the mind which may arise


there will always be some who take it too far and end up damiging themselves, which is why the slow steady method of awareness is far superior to the crowbar method of taking copius amounts of psychdelics

It really is a good movie. It was inaccurate enough, from what I know (very little) about controlling dreams and such, that I don't think it would be very impressionable on anyone who DOES know about lucid dreaming. If you know absolutely nothing though, and then someone tried to tell you about lucid dreaming, you'd probably never want to even go there. :P

it is JUST A MOVIE so do not take it seriously but it is very good!

Simply enough, the guy is ignorant about WILDing. He's wrong because it's definitely something you can control. Although we as humans go into SP sometimes without our wanting to it's not something that happens on a regular basis, especially without the drive for it to occur. And as for mixing up dreams with reality?

It is not rumour. Now there are many different opinions on the dangers, one only has to read The Art of Dreaming by Carlos Casteneda. I then came across a book written by an occultist, an adept, and veteran lucid dreamer. I have used some of the techniques from this book in lucid dreams and I have proven that the dream state is not merely a conjuration of biochemical processes within the brain...It is far more than that and there are dangers. I do believe there might be some truth to this. I've read similar things in conscious dreaming by Robert Moss. Then again, it all depends on what you choose to do with lucid dreaming.

Someone who has abandoned the trivial pursuit of an hallucination might disagree, whiterain. If you know what you're experiencing is not real, yet can not figure out how your mind could still create [something] that elaborate, then you might be tempted to explore that particular aspect of it.

If you let go of it all to pursue this delusion then you will suffer, it's that simple. Some people just know how to bring it into their waking life, though they usually end up in a state hospital.

I wiki'd the book and am not impressed, something to do with "the gates of dreaming" having a physical location in the body (first one is the foot, second is the calf...?), seems very much like nonsense to me, also he says something about an "energy body"? Ill assume this is pretty much a soul or something alike, and there is no proof for the existence of the soul (Someone correct me with evidence if they can)... mcwillis, having read the book maybe you can explain in more detail about these things, and show that they have any validity in reality (don't just list me another book to read, you're making the claims, you have to provide the evidence.)

mcwillis, if lucid dreaming were dangerous, we would all be dead, because we have multiple dreams in one night.

your energy body is essentially just your thought body or the body you are in while dreaming. it is annoying when they use these terms that put people off though

I just started with the whole LD thing.. Kinda never had i LD (i guess). So i am curious if i should start with it or just leave it..
Cuz i think i would love it when i could do WILD/WBTB just in the middle of the week or so... (how many times is max for a WILD/WBTB within 1 week?)

SP is unavoidable. It happens every time you fall asleep and is perfectly harmless. But if you're really that worried about it, I suggest becoming an insomniac.

Actually ment the sort of SP combined with a FA (the one that your in your room, can't move and you feel something evil or so?)

And what bout the LDs and WILDs?

It's literally the same thing.

It's not about avoiding SP. The short response to that is: "You can't."

It's about accepting SP, and being able to relax enough to where it doesn't bother you. The only reason people become disturbed by SP is because it's a weird sensation that they just don't know how to ride out. All you have to is relax, accept the fact that you're in SP, and won't easily be able to move, and either play with the mind state or just relax your body and fall back asleep.

All of the anxiety over SP is really unnecessary. People just need to learn how to roll with it.
