iv heard that if you imagine a picture in your mind, and then for like 10 mins explain your picture outloud to a friend or just to air, like if your explaining a beach, heres an example

      its a beach,
      it has golden sand,
its a bright and sunny day,
      theres seagulls chirping,
the sand is small and cubelike,
      the water is warm,
      the water is calm,
the sun is warm on my face,
      etc. etc. etc.

things like that, and everytime you say somthing imagine feeling it, or seeing it in a mental picture, do this twice a day and it will dramatically increase your dream quality
~I wake up a little more every time I dream.

I'm sure reading books would help to strengthen your imagination / mental vision. I don't think it matters what genre the books are.

I also like SantaDreamsToo's idea. I think it would be fun just to rant into a tape recorder for ten minutes and then play it back a few days later, and see if I can still imagine my crisp, golden beach.
