I have only had one lucid dream before, hoping for another one tonight. Anyways, how long can you make a lucid dream last?
a REM cycle is a REM cycle. You can make a lucid dream incrementally longer by swinging your arms, whirling like a dervish, or by deep and rapid breathing -- all of which might give you another dream episode. But dreams are no longer simply because they are Lucid.
After you have had a few Lucid Dreams you might begin to perceive that dreams fluctuate according to an almost perceptable consciousness energy that tends to fuel them from within you. When that energy is strong you feel it. And when it weakens, you can feel it slipping away.
Once I tried to hold onto a dream and I was able to slow down my waking up. What happened was that the Dream Scene broke down more slowly, and instead of merely waking up as the dream scene vanished, the Dream Scene turned into a spoken narrative of descriptive terms -- sort of the way you can see exactly what Thomas Hardy (the best narrative describer in the english language) is describing when you read one of his novels, only backwards -- first you see it, and then it resolves into words.
