The reality check is a 'conscious decision', but the appearance of the dreamsign is not. Is there a school of thought that says we somehow subconciously create the dreamsign to prompt the reality check? If so, does anyone have a way of 'sowing' dreamsigns into their dreams for an increase of reality checks leading to lucidity?

Hello,
If I understand you correctly, my experience is a little contrary. I not only manifest my dreamsigns but do so consciously. In fact, I sometimes wish it were the opposite for me.
I do this by selecting an object prior to sleep. It's not exciting, either. I tend to choose something mechanical, such as a digital alarm clock, a computer monitor, television, etcetera, because there is usually no way of mistaking them for a tangible object in the dreamstate. They always appear obviously askew in my dreams and leave little guesswork to prompt a reality check.
The first time I did this, it was by mistake. I had exited my body but was unaware that I had done so. Then, I noticed that my alarm clock read a time that was impossible - 33:33. I then did a reality check and turned to see my body resting on the bed.
From that point forward, I began noticing mechanical objects in my dreamstate and some (but not all) OBE's. I wish I could say I had a more esoteric or ethereal dreamsign, but these objects seem to "do the job" quite well.
So oftentimes for me, it is Perceived Lucidity > Dreamsign > Reality Check > Confirmation of Lucidity. One might ask "Why search for a dreamsign when you are already lucid?" However, to that I would say, "I can never be certain until I am certain."
