I started recording my dreams in my computer with some software a few weeks ago. I'll describe it a bit. If there is any different software that you like feel free to mention it.

First I tried the dream software "Alchera 3.7". It was ok, but I didn't like it very much. You can find it here:
http://mythwell.com/alchera/index.html

I know there are free online dream journals. I think they are cool if you want to share your dreams with other people. I don't want to do that though, I want my dreams saved on my own computer.

The software I am using now that I love is "LifeJournal" version 2.0. You can find it here:
http://lifejournal.com/
You can download a full demo of the software there to see it for yourself, the limitation for the demo version is that you can only enter 15 dreams. It is about $40 to buy.

It isn't specifically made for dreams, it can be used for both dreams and traditional journal entries. It is easy to do both and keep them seperated. I won't go into all the details but I'll mention some things. It has a good text editor, with the usual text formatting options if you are into making it look nice. You can insert pictures directly into an entry which I like to do to liven things up. Sometimes if there is an animal, a celebrity, etc., in my dream, I might find a picture on the internet and insert it. You can put hyperlinks in your entries. If a celebrity shows up in my dream I usually make them into links. At first I linked to their imdb page, but then sometimes I used their Wikipedia page instead, because the information is sometimes more interesting, like when I dream of Eliza Dushku.

The formatting, layout and features are cool. What I like about the software the most is the ability to assign topics to the dreams which allow for fast and simple searching and filtering to find lists of dreams based on their categories. You can make any topics you want. When you are creating a dream entry, there is a topic window on the right with all your topics, and to assign one to the dream, you just click on it. Along with the topics are sub-topics. For example, you might have a topic called "Family", then a sub-topic for any or all of your family members, like mom, dad, brother, wife, etc. I have topics and sub-topics for a variety of things like common locations, hobbies, or activities such as flying, swimming, fighting, etc. I have topics for friends and work. I also have dream and lucid related topics for things such as WILD, false awakening, spinning, summoning, etc. And of course I have a lucid topic, so I can quickly filter my 231 dreams into a list of only my lucid dreams, 31 of them at this time.

You can do specific searches such as all dreams that are Lucid and have your friend John Smith with flight. You do a search and check the box for each topic you want. Or you can just filter it based on one topic at a time which is quicker. In the left window you see all the topics and sub-topics, you just click on one and your list is instantly filtered to just the matching dreams.

You will assign each dream a title, as short or long as you want. Then in your master list you will see the list of titles, so you can quickly see a screenfull overview of your dreams, much faster than ruffling through stacks of paper, or scanning down a massive notepad text file, like I used to do. I can see 40 dream titles listed at a time with my screen resolution and font size. Along with the titles, it also shows the date, and a list of all the topics for each of the dreams.

There are a few small bugs or quirks in the software, a few things like, after you do a filter, if you click a "show all" button to show everything, the topic filter will stop working, until you restart, or just do a new "search" to refresh the list. It isn't hard to avoid or get around. I've contacted the programmer and he said he is releasing a new update soon which overhauls the search/filter, and corrects this.

After getting the software I cut and pasted my old dreams from text files into the software database, gave them titles, and added topics. I just love to be able to quickly see all the dreams and find what I want to find quickly, and filter the list into topics I'm interested in to see how common different things are, and to look for patterns, such as commonalities in the dreams that became lucid. It is also fun to see how often I dream about different friends or family or even pets. One thing I found interesting was that the place I live now, which I've lived at for 3 years, I've only dreamed of 4 times, but my last home, where some family still lives, I've dreamed of 27 times.
