Idea ! - audio story ASILD

      Idea - audio story
I’ve noticed in more then one dream there will be a friend talking but his voice is not the same as in reality. I leave the TV on a lot when I sleep and this morning I was hearing a DC that I know in real life only the voice was different. I started to wake, half in the dream state and half awake. Wile waking, I then realized the voice and the things he or they were talking about are the same theme and voice that’s on the TV. It gave me an idea to make recordings with a theme that has to do with becoming Lucid. Instead of “are you dreaming” over and over I was thinking about short stories that involve the character asking people in different settings “you might be dreaming” And let it flow in with the topic or theme of the play. Has anyone tried using an audio story scenario?

In all honesty I think that's a great idea, at least for people who can sleep when there's noise. Personally I'm not so fortunate because my mind focuses on what people are saying rather than falling asleep. We could try our hands at creating such stories, tho.

The nice thing about this, though, is that each person can tailor the story to whatever they desire and wouldn't have to be in a formal story format. You could come up with a dialogue between two people without any clear beginning. I have a hard time finishing stories so this would be great for me to try.

How long do you think these would need to be written in order to last for a reasonable amount of time? You could even loop the conversation after a while so you don't always have to come up with new stuff.

Sounds good. I would be interested in the type of dialog you come up with. A timer or computer with an audio file alarm can trigger it. It would not have to be any specific length because the file can be repeated. Multiple themes may be desired because it would be interesting to see what one incorporated into a dream. Buy the way. Any volume level could be experimented with so that it would be custom adjusted to allow you to sleep. There would not have to be any sound when going to sleep. Actually I would think short conversations with the dominant voice or most profound voice saying something to the effect of “Buy the way, did you do a reality check” or “I’m dreaming, are you?” Etc.

Sweet. I'll try my hand at writing up some stuff. If you have any topics you'd like tried out, I'll see what I can do. I don't have any voice-recording equipment, but if one of you guys would like to do it that'd be awesome.

(btw, dialogue is what I tend to do better at. This should be fun!)

Might try this over the weekend. The recording of people talking would probaly be that of someone with a low toned voice or soft voice so it's not loud or (not high pitched, high toned?can't think of the word)to disturb your dreaming or anyone else's sleeping.
It would also come down to getting the timing correct, since some people don't remember they're dreaming during the earlier stages of sleep, getting it timed towards the second or last stage would be best. Instead of trying to figure out the time you're sleeping or whatever, make it less complex and just have it as a timer(as stated before). Maybe make it go off around 4 hours into dreaming. Even something as simple as someone saying "You're dreaming" would work(it would have to repeat a few times since it's human nature to question what someones saying(in a dream it would most likely be.)
Sorry if I didn't make any sense, quite tired.

Okay. I've got three samples. Let me know what you think.

Meant to be read as a lecture.

It is not uncommon for you to awaken to find yourself lying on soft green grass spanning as far as the eye can see. Off to the left you are able to see the grass flowing leisurely over the hills, flowing gently with the cool, quiet breeze that blows through it. Feeling the breeze passing by, you feel content with the fact that you are in a dream. Are you dreaming? It is common for places to change and you will then be in a forest of tall green trees. When you look up you can see a few scattered rays of sunlight filtering through the branches. You look at the ground and see the shadows spell out, “Are you dreaming?” You look away and when you look back all you see are normal shadows. Seeing that things have you changed you perform a reality check to discover that you are dreaming. You feel the coolness of the shade and the soft light that is pleasing to the eye. It feels great to be lucid.[/b]

“I am from a dream not too far from here. I was just in the neighborhood and decided to stop by.”

“What have you been doing lately?”

“Oh, not much. I’ve been doing reality checks to see if I am dreaming. Are you dreaming?”

“I’m not sure, let me find out.” (Give time for reality check) “I am dreaming! Thanks for reminding me.”

“Not a problem. It was nice to meet you.”

“It was nice to meet you, too. When will you be back?”

“I’m not sure. I’ve got places to go and people to see, but I’ll check in to see if you are doing reality checks. Are you still dreaming?”

“Let me find out.” (Give time for reality check) “I am dreaming! Thanks for reminding me.”

“Not a problem. I’ll talk to you later.”

      “Sweet lucid dreams.”

The light switch wouldn’t work as s/he stood by the doorway. The light stayed on no matter what. Finally she did a reality check to see if she was dreaming and found out that she was.

      “This is odd.”

      “Yes, it’s weird.”

      “Who are you?”

“A dream guide. If you’re not awake you should look around to see if you are dreaming.” Leave time for observation. “Do you notice anything weird?”

      “Yes.”

      “What?”

“This doesn’t belong here. And I’m in my bed sleeping so I can’t be here.”

      “You must be dreaming.”

      “Thanks for telling me.”

“It’s nothing. Just look around more often. You’ll be surprised at what you see.

The first one is more of a narration that sounds good as a setting but I think two and three are actual dialogue that is likely to trigger a conversation in a dream. That’s good. When I get the time to set up an audio alarm I’ll use some of the quotes.

Repeat the parts you want questioned. Yes But not to much repetition because that tends to echo as just sounds. I think

I have the same effect if I leave my tv or radio on at night. I used to listen to a lot of talking books when I was younger and I would always have dreams about the stories. I would never stay awake through the whole tape but I would always seem to know the ending.

You could just leave "Waking Life" on while you sleep

If you could sleep through all of the volume changes. It's very variable.

I'll see if there's anything else I can come up with that might sound a little different.

      Hey,

This sounds like a great idea, I have some recording equipment maybe I will try this. On a slightly unrelated note, has anyone found a way to listen to headphones without nearly smashing the cd-player or mp3 player they were using while asleep? I've tried but I seem to always pull it under me. Well I'm off to see if I can stand to listen to my own voice for hours on end.

      Thanks,

      Nick
