Thread: If you were in a coma, would you want to LD?

Would you want to lucid dream if you were in a coma? I'm not sure if it would be possible, and I'm not really sure if I would want to be stuck in a world that isn't reality. Whether it be drug induced or dream induced...to me reality is where it's at...I think that after a short stint I would want to be back in real life...

What do you all think?

Just so everyone can stick to one scneario, say you are going to be in a coma for 3 months and at the end you'll wake up, of course while you are in your LD you don't know you're going to wake up...

Sure - why not? It's not like you have any place else to be or anything else to do with your time, right?

I owudl want ot be Lucid so I coudl still live. Even though nothing aorudn me would be real, im sure i could convince myslef and go semi psychotic so i have a life.

Do you mean if one went into a coma unexpectedly?

One of the issues would be the sleep cycles and what goes on with the brain and mind in a comatose state.

How would a person know he/she is in a coma and not just sleeping/dreaming, unless they really remembered the last moments or leading up to the condition.

Would the person conclude the 'reality' is a dream by means of reality checks, etc? What about the capacity to remember dreams during the coma, the anxiety of knowing the person may not really wake up, the even more uncertain passage of time etc?

But to answer your original question, yes!

Im not sure if you even dream while in a coma, but if I were suddenly in a dream and I go lucid and then I remember that I had a terrible accident and I havent woken up since, then I guess LDing indefinately in a coma isnt such a bad idea. At least I would be having fun, right?

Some people have reported dreams while in comas. It's more common to have an idea of what's going around you (your physical self, I mean), though.

And, yeah--3 months, no problem. I'd have time to do all those experiments I've never had time to do while I'm in my normal 20-ish minute LD's.

How the hell would I know I'm in a coma in the first place? But yeah, I think I would like to try, but I may not remember it.

Well, I would, there is nothing else you can do, I mean, you cant wake up so trying things that would wake you up from normal sleep could be fun, the only thing is that , will you remember it?

if i knew i would have an LD if i went into a coma i would hit myself with a frying pan until i felt into one!

Yes I would but I don’t think normally it would be possible. I think being awake shortly before going to sleep helps to be lucid while asleep.

Of course, why waste unconsciousness? Now the tricky part is having the luck of getting a reality check done, or else you're stuck in that coma for quite a while. (jk, there are other ways...)

The problem is... if your dream is a nightmare and you have no control over the dream... 3 months will be a looooong nightmare

What kind of shape would your psyche be in after awakening from three months of lucid dreaming?

Imagine, having godlike powers for three months and then having them taken away from you?

Kind of like being able to see in color for three months and then awakening to a black and white world.

I'm of mixed opinion here. Coma usually implies no conciousness of the passage of time. You fall asleep and then wake up three months later and is seems like an instant.

Coma generally lasts a few days to a few weeks, and rarely lasts more than 2 to 4 weeks. After this time, some patients gradually come out of the coma, some progress to a vegetative state, and others die. Many patients who have gone into a vegetative state go on to regain a degree of awareness. Others may remain in a vegetative state for years or even decades. Predicted chances of recovery are variable due to different techniques used to measure the extent of neurological damage.

So, if you were to become lucid in a coma, it might take you some time to attain lucidity, bearing in mind that there was a reason you are in a coma in the first place. If you've seen Vanilla sky, you might have been dumbfounded by the couch jumping celebrity's decision to return to normal life. So it all depends on one's own personality how you'd cope with reality after having lucid dreaming powers for an extended time. It all depends if you'd be aware that your'e having a lucid experience in a coma, waking up and realizing that being in the real world isn't that bad after all, seeing that you've been granted a second chance at life after recovering from a coma.

I don't think it's possible to have a lucid dream in a coma. You go into a coma for a reason. The brain has had so much damage that it must re-boot. Most people wake up from comas slowly, take months-even a year to recover, and don't remember anything in the days leading up to the coma, or the coma itsself. Even if you managed to have a lucid dream you would wake up so "out of touch" that you wouldn't remember it.

But to answer the question, yes I would. I think I could handle being in a lucid dream for a few weeks-even 3 months. The worst thing would be the lonliness. Knowing that everyone in your dream is just an imagination would be hard. Like being the last one on earth.

I was in a coma for 6 days.

The whole experience had the feel of reality and i remembered nothing of how i came to be in the coma dream world, to me, it was the only world i had ever known, interesting thing though was that whilst in the coma dream world i went to "sleep" numerous times and when i did this i was lucid and was aware i was asleep but only aware i was asleep in the dream world and not aware that i was in a coma in reality.

Strange experience.

In retrospect would i have liked to have been really lucid throughout those 6 days?
