Thread: Polymorphism - Can it be Done?

I've been reading around the forums and I see this over and over again. People saying that in a dream world you can do "anything". It makes me wonder though... can you truely do anything in a dream even if you have 100% complete control? In paticular I am speaking of what I guess would be called polymorphism. Atleast thats the closest name I could come up for it. Bascially I am refering to making copies of ones self and being able to control them. Similar to how Agent Smith made copies of him self in The Matrix Reloaded or how people can cast spells to make copies or clones.

The interesting thing is that although it might be possible to make a copy of yourself by simply imagining that another "you" appears; however can you ever have complete control of two bodies/consciences in a dream? Can you exist in two planes or dream locations at the same time with your multiple entities? I just find it hard to imagine that our mind could control two bodies like they would in these movies or TV shows to the point where the bodies are completely independent, yet at the same time act as one being.

Has anyone successfully had a real polymorphism expierence? And by real I mean the entities could be seperate yet still know everything that the other ones do and not just summoning a person that looks like you. I am preferring to have more than one "point of view" in the dream, because even in a dream world, you have some sort of point of view, usually it being yourself, although I've heard of people who have had 3rd person dreams where they were watching themselves perform actions from outside their body.

I think it would be possible. Although I've never heard of something exactly as you say happening, I have read of people who came very close to having two points of view simultaneously, though it was more like a rapid switching between the two. I think that the biggest hurdle would be the amount of concentration required to maintain to seperate selves. The amount of information required could be overwhelming. Considering that a number of people have difficulty rubbing their stomach and patting their head, sensing and controlling two independant bodies would be tough.

That's not to say it can't be done, though. In dreaming, people are always finding new possibilities; the trick is finding a technique that makes them easier to accomplish. For example, 360 vision has been done, though its something that's difficult to visualize in waking life. I suppose you could start by learning how to use two points of view, for example, first person, and that of a disembodied observer, watching yourself. Then learn to controll two things at once, by telekinesis or whatever method you prefer. Combining the two and making a few small adjustments might just work with some practice.

I think you have a very good point, ({singular}, no pun intended). You may of come up with what could be a Limit on Dreaming. It may not be possible to have more then one point of view at any given moment. Well done. Maybe you have started a realistic Limit on dreaming and that may be productive with respect to understanding Lucid Dreams.

Woah, polymorphism is really a crazy thing.

Personally I think no. I think polymorphism, just like the 4th dimension or infinity, is a concept that can be "understood" by the human mind but never fully grasp. I can't imagine how you could be conscious from two different perspectives simultaneously, just like you couldn't go "up" in the 4th dimension in a dream.

I have had a non-lucid dream in which I was actually 3 "me's" doing 3 different tasks simultaneously. It was extremely disturbing. It made me feel as if I was losing my mind. That feeling stayed with me for days.

it can be done yes like the dude above said , i to have experianced being multiple me's but i am not sure it can be done to the extent of agent smith in the matrix....i only existed in 2 places at once...who knows though.

I've heard many interesting stories in the occult commnunity of people having OBE's while they're awake. They claim to be in full control of both the physical body and their apparent spiritual double who is flying around them. They say it is a very wonderful and peaceful experience. Of course, it's a once in a lifetime thing, so far. It's reproducibilty is probably more difficult than cold fusion.

I had a pretty strange experience this morning. I just woke up from a lucid dream and tried to get right back to sleep. I was on my stomach and I was lying perfectly still. I could feel myself enter the hypnogogic state and I tried very hard to make a full transition to sleep and remain aware. My body strarted to go "numb"(for lack of a better word)and I felt something that resembled a magnetic(again, for lack of a better word)pull on my entire body. I could still feel my body(although it was still in this "numb" state), but I also had an entirely different perspective from the bottom of the bed and to the left( I felt as though I was being pulled diagonally away from the bed and towards the wall). I felt as if I was in 2 places at once. There was a pressure building in both locations and in between and I can't really say that I've felt anything like it before. It wasn't the same as my dream experience at all. I could still hear the fan next to my bed and my breathing. There was a point when I "snapped out of it", but even after I woke up completely, I still had a residual buzz from the whole experience. I wish that I had a better way to explain it, maybe it will happen again and I'll understand it better. I am very sceptical about OBE's(OOBE's, whatever)because of the lack of proof/evidence, but I can see why people would be led to believe that they are in fact seperating from their body if they went through the same experience. I can't entirely discount OBE's, but like I said, it would take much more than someone telling me the phenomena exists to convince me(proof!). Who knows, maybe I'm dying.
