      Dream pain

Heya, I did do a search but came up with nothing....however feel free to correct me on this and lock if needed!

I need to get this off my chest as it really upsets me and is starting to happen more and more. I'm no lucid dreamer, I can't do it and I don't mind too much about that. Thing is lately I have been having more and more dreams in which I get hurt...physical pain and very bad very real feeling pain at that.

The thing is that I can't wake up from them so there I am totally asleep yet in agony sometimes in these dreams (well nightmares really). Am I the only one who gets this? i didn't think you should be able to feel pain in dreams! It gets so bad that sometimes the area that gets hurt on me in the dream feels uncomfortable for the whole iof the day after!

Am I on my own with this and any ideas why this happens? It's very upsetting!

      Thanks all.

That is a very unfortunate experience indeed.
How often do such dreams happen?

Perhaps concerning yourself with things more pleasurable and relieving as much stress as possible during the waking time can help in stopping such painful dreams from happening simply because as far as I've deduced, concerns, real, subconscious and deep concerns, effect dreams, which makes sense in itself considering the close relation of dreams and the subconscious.

Well I tend to have a nightmare every night which is annoying but ones like this happen every three weeks or there abouts. I try to forget most of them, but the one that stays with me most was one where I got murdered by a guy who cut my throat and I dreamt through the entire thing from start to finish. My neck feels weird just thinking about that one.

Last night I had one again along the same lines but this time it was my legs which were getting cut and I could feel every part of it....I swear I was almost sick when i woke up.

Ohh babe! It sounds really upsetting, i hav'nt any advice to give as when i get hurt or murdered in my dreams - I never feel any pain, just a sort of warm, bubbly, distracted feeling.
So anyway i can only offer tea and sympathy, but to the casual observer, perhaps you know what is at the root of these nightmares and need to address that? I could be wrong.....

      Well, one slight possibility....

Look at how you lie to sleep. Maybe somehow, you're lying in such a position that you cause yourself actual discomfort while you're asleep, and this just gets amplified in your dreams.

      Just something to consider...

I do feel pain in my dreams, but not as bad or often as you are describing. That sounds really awful.
I'm certainly no expert, but my only guess would be that it's a manifestation of a problem/problems in your waking life. Try talking to someone, maybe a counselor if it gets bad enough.
You could try meditation/relaxation before bed... otherwise, I'm at a loss for ideas.
Good luck, and please let us know how things turn out.

Thanks for all the replies guys and gals! I've told a few people about this now, all of them tend to react in the same way!

I always sleep in the recovery position and always with two pillows. I just don't know what could have kick started all of this. The leg one is still so fresh in my mind and as for the other one I have been unable to forget it even though it happened weeks ago. I woke up holding my neck because in the dream I had been trying to hold it all together long enought to call people and tell them I love them...that's one thing that upset me more than everything else...coupled with the gklaring knowledge that I wasnot ready for what was happening.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would be to blame for this. The last two years have been pretty tough for various reasons, but that's not so bad now yet they started once things where getting/had got better. Makes no sense that!

I'm used to having nightmares a lot, but this is just upsetting.

Hmmm, I'm not sure I'd be keen on that to be honest. I wouldn't like the idea that I wouldn't know what I'd done in my sleep. I went through a phase once where I would get out of bed, know I'd done it, eventually get back into bed and be aware of that too but not know what I'd done when I had been up. I didn't like that much (thankfully it stopped!!!) so I'm not sure I want to take pills to make me forget.

Chances are these dreams may even mean something so remembering them may not be a bad thing!...Now if only I knew what they were trying to tell me

      Dream pain!

I happen to get hurt in my dreams all the time! And I have woke up a lot of times with pain, but I just try to forget about it. One of the last dreams I had I ended up getting shot 3 times! It hurt in the dream, but I sucked up the pain lol

I once woke up with a bruise on my stomach after dreaming about being punched there . I never found any reason for it to be there unless I hit myself during the night.

But usualy when I feel pain in a dream I wake up with a cramp.

I have had a few dreams in the past where I felt pain for no reason, I sorted them by telling myself and believing that there is no pain in a dream.

I think it's unusual to feel such intense pain in dreams, but feeling some pain seems fairly common. I think the "no pain in dreams" thing is just a myth. I know that when I'm shot or otherwise injured in dreams, I certainly feel it.

Do you keep a journal or have you considered keeping one to help determine whether there's something in your waking life that's triggering these dreams - perhaps, as has already been suggested, intense stress or anxiety, or perhaps something more subtle? Also, when did they start? Was there a major event in your life? In any case, if these dreams increase in frequency or intensity beyond what you think you can cope with, you ought to consider seeking professional help.

I have pain in dreams, but it's not exactly... real. My mind tells me that something should hurt, and I decide that it does hurt, but I don't really feel it. I've felt real pain once. A guy jabbed me in the side. He grabbed me and jammed his finger in my side. It hurt more and more until it hurt so bad I woke up. I never did figure out what it was, but maybe I got a cramp or something. It left as soon as i was awake.

I was just reading something about taking sleeping pills before you go to bed to help you sleep better, i dont think youd want to for several reasons:
Sleeping pills are addictive, my friend has done them before.
He says he would rather suffer a low sleep rate rather than taking sleeping pills, because they make you feel so tired during the day.
Maybe they would help you, but you might want to consult you doc before you take any. Anyway, i dont really experience dreams with pain, except for last night i got shot. Its funny how your mind can make up the pain. In you dream, you have to understand that your own mind, yourself is making up the dream.
If you understand this, i guarantee it will be better. Now, many of us have our issues, and yours is pain in your dreams.

Theres always a solution to a problem, so just try to become lucid so you can stop the pain. You can do it my friend, if you mind can make the pain, it can also stop the pain.[/quote]
