is less sleep more efficient? (Polyphasic sleep)

I stumbled upon this article at slashdot (http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/.../1956250.shtml) about polyphasic sleep. I'm not sure if this has been talked about here but basically, it says that we need less sleep because the only phase that we really need is REM. It states when you are somewhat deprived of the earlier stages in monophasic sleep you tend to go to REM sleep faster. You can read more about it

      here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep
      and here: http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000573063569/

my question is, has anyone actually tried this, and if so.. were you able to achieve lucidity through this method?

Sounds interesting. I know the ARMY has conducted numerous experiments on this subject. I have a friend that was a ranking officer and was over seas for quite some time. He told me that his unit slept an average of four hours a night, and was on patrol/working the rest of the time. He said that the first week was really rough, constantly tired ect. But after that the body got used to it and functioned tottaly normally. I'll have to try to find some hard evidence online on this one. I know how many critics are on here and want evidence!

This sleeping methos sounds great because it makes all the sleep you have in to REM sleep(in theory anyway) and the more i read about it the more i wanted to try it and i might just do that, but before anybody else does i sujjest you read up on the health risks and side affects of it and also the blogs of people who have tried it on wiki

I tend to get a lot of WILDs started when I take powernaps during the day. I used to sleep about 5 - 6 hours then take a 1 - 2 hour nap in the afternoon. The efficiency to have LDs depends on the person I guess. Some people have DILDs all the time with RCs, other people have WILDs all the time. Just figure out what's working for you.

especially take note of the menton of lucid and the mention of lack of dreams in the followup. it is fairly thorough.
