The big question, can you do arithmetic?

First off to explain myself, I am a math geek which is schooling for a math degree, I love math. Alright that said...

Has anyone ever attempted to see if you could do arithmetic instantly while lucid dreaming? Like imagine a calculator or some smart philosopher person and see if it worked?

Considering the amount of complex and dynamic realities your mind can create out of nothing, I am highly skeptical you CANNOT do simple arithmetic instantly, in fact I think you could probably do algebra or even calculus instantly.. "Hey philosopher dude, derive this function for me and find the integral a,b NOW"

Sounds interesting. I'm not a math major, but in order to get my degree in engineering, I had to take a lot of math!

It would be interesting to see if you could do LaPlace transforms also!!

Seriously now. I have never done any math. But three times I have been able to play chess in my dreams. The whole aspect of the game and board were clear to me. It was awesome, however I never was able to come close to finishing a game. I think our subconcious could open up a whole new can of whoop %*$#@ on math Chess or any other thing one might be facinated with.
I read somewhere that if you create a special room in your lucid dream (In your case it would be the math room) you can then visit it in your dreams when you think about the room. Also you can work on the stability off the room. Can't say from expieriance but I have been trying.

Well i am not a math person but i am interested in making music in my dreams, because of the direct access to the subconcious. I know i can do simple maths(very simple) because i use it to increase lucidity. Also in EWLD there is an example of someone that used his dreams to solve chemical problems, so i'm sure you can do maths if you have good control upon your dream.

I hate math, I'm good at it, but I hate it. Science used to be my fav. subject, until I took Chemistry and Physics, the extensive involvement of math now made history my fav subject.

I also like vocab too, mainly because I have this werid talent for it in that I can memorize vocab words with a glance. It's the only thing keeping my English grades up currently.

But back on topic, I tried doing math in a dream and it didn't work. (4*16=416) Though thinking of language based subjects works. Maybe it depends on the person.

Math is okay. I have to use it for all these complicated program things anyway. I'm not exactly a avid fan of it, though. I mean, what could be fun about trying to work out "2^45903*(54+83-(cossine-1))", or something complicated like that?

Actually...it would be intresting to do that... *adds to LD to-do list*

Im with ya Prometheus. I've actually tabulated several mathimatical factors in a dream, and the results varied in result to my Lucid Level. Im going to tell you based on my experience I haven't been successful at all with basic mathimatical problems let alone more complex intergers Numbers in a dream changes quite often not only that, your focal point is shorten. Remember even in Lucid Dreaming Logic is not on our side So mixing around with lots of complexed numbers in an LD you are sure to lose focus and drift back into normal dreaming mode. Math has always been my favorite subject, I mean no matter what you will always come with one answer (being the right answer that is) there is no if's or maybes about it it's either a right answer or wrong one.

The rest of you though... hahaha you would f3@r what I do for fun.... like that one example problem given, I would solve that for fun! In fact, when I first learned Trigonometry I spent countless hours searching for a simple function to give me any sin() or cos(), which I find, the Taylor Series, but it was Caclulus, so I learned the basics of Calculus in a couple hours to understand that. I proceeded to show it to my math teacher, which was in total shock at my work, "You learned limits, to derive, and to do the integral in a couple hours?" "Yea, what's the big deal?" *staring* "What?"

But NightWing touched on why I love math, it is static, it is constant, it is absolute, A is A, there is only one right answer and anything that contradicts that is wrong.

So if I can't make lucid dreams a stable and orderly world, that is permanent which I can go back to all the time, and which allows me to work on math and other hardcore intellectual stuff, I will be extremely bored of it and probably not do it anymore. Believe it or not, fantasy stories, even the idea of being part of one, I find extremely boring and would put me to sleep.

haha i gave it a try. i had a lucid dream last night and i thought the theory was interesting so i gave it a whirl. -- i said, "give me the best calculator in the world." then i pulled out this ti-89 looking thing. most of the buttons were the same as the ti-89 and it had a yellow face plate. i then tried to graph two functions. something like y = x and y = 2x + 3 (easy stuff that i should know) then i hit graph... the screen just kept flashing busy in the lower right hand corner. then i looked away and back only to find some weird script all over the screen... at this point i said, "f*ck this," threw the calculator and went exploring.

you also have to understand i have the attention span of a gold fish. my math abilities aren't to spectacular either... this might work for you if you can concentrate on what you're doing.

See Math isn't bad at all dealing with numbers is utimately the Universal language. If we couldn't have any other connection with any intelligent life from a distant star I could gaurantee we can have mathematical factors and numbers as a common ground and a valid form of communication.

Prometheus You Rock Man! Im down with anyone who desires math on that level. You gotta lot of potential use it wisely.

doing math in a dream seems conterproductive...the whole thing about dreaming is that your logical mind is not in control like usually, but rather your creative illogical...art and music are cools things to do in dreams...i usually draw things from my dreams after i wake, cause drawing them in the dream would be silly, but im with you with the music thing...only problem is it would probably just e a repeat of some song you heard somewhere before, as opposed to anything new

I'm sorry but I don't understand the phrase "creative illogically"

similar to how I couldn't understand the phrase "apple orange", logic is required for the creative process

I am really for the most part convinced that you can to math quicker than any computer at any complex level if you put your mind to it and demand it from your subconsciouss. I cannot say it is a fact until I actually do it myself in a lucid dream of course, being a see it to believe it kind of guy

Here is a simple deduction of why you should be able to do math in lucid dreams... You can do music in dreams, I know for a fact some great composers of classical music get their compositions from dreams. ok. music requires math, you cannot make a 4/4 without making sure each bar has 4 quarter notes, etc. etc. Also a lot of the great composers of classical music claimed they portrayed a form of high level math in their music, a form of high and complex order, which I totally agree with.

To put it simply, doing any type of music requires math, doing good music requires complex math. You can do music in dreams. Therefore...

Well...yes and no. Music has a very close relationship to maths. The difference you have to use maths(the music system) but in a level of great skill in order to use them for the creation. That's when the subconcious mind has to work sometimes. While maths are stored in your memmory as a skill, in your dreams you can have acces to the subconsious and make something unique.

So i think that you can do mathematics but i don't know untill witch level. Maybe it could help you for the understanding of some advanced abstract theories. By the way, do you know Iannis Xenakis? is a composer that uses mathematics and other sciences(like physics or architecture) to make music. My avatar is a small part of a piece called Erikthon.
