Just bought three lucid dreaming books

I already had LaBerge's Exploring the world of Lucid Dreaming, and his other one which I think is just called Lucid Dreaming.

      I got these three:

The Lucid Dreamer - Malcolm Godwin
The Lucid Dreaming Kit - Paul Devereux and Charla Devereux
      Creative Dreaming - Patricia Garfield

At leats 2 of those are pretty old (published in early 90s/80s I'd say...) The lucid dreaming kit comes with a cassette and some 'lucid dreaming oil.' I haven't tried the oil yet, or looked into exactly what the main ingredient's properties are, but my first impression was that it was a load of phooey.

I haven't started reading any of them yet; I want to finish my current book first. When I read them, I'll keep you all updated on how good they are, and how useful I find them.

I found out a little more about the oil. It's clary sage oil, mixed in grapeseed oil. The clary sage is the part meant to be useful to lucid dreaming. From what I've read, clary sage is a herb, often used in aromatherapy for its calming effect. I haven't found anything about it directly linked to dreaming though.

Ah, I found something about dreams. It's apparently meant to induce more vivid dreams and improve dream recall.

The only vaguely professional site that has that information is this one:

      http://www.susunweed.com/Article_ClarySage.htm

As well as clary sage, it's known simply as clary, or as European sage. It's scientific name is Salvia sclarea.

The book suggests rubbing a small amount onto an area of the skin where it will be quickly absorbed, before you go to sleep, such as the third-eye part of your forehead, your temples, or your armpits. The first two seem more useful, as that way you'll actually be more able to smell it.

So, I'll try it when I start reading that book, and let you guys know if I notice anything.

Sorry it's been so long. My reading schedule was completely disrupted by the release of the newest Haryr Potter book last week.

I started reading The Lucid Dreaming Kit last night. My first impressions were that ti manages to describe and explan lucid dreaming veyr well, possibly better than LaBerge's Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming.

I'll be reading more of it tonight, so I'll have more to say about it tomorrow. If I decide to try the clary sage oil, or the induction tape that it comes with, then I'll recount my experiences here.

But, basically, the content in The Lucid Dreaming Kit seems promising.

Malcolm Godwin's book is really interesting. It focusses a lot on the mystical views on lucid dreaming. It is also full of phenomenal paintings. It is one of the best art books I own.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

cool. I wonder, do the books say anything new that cannot be found on the internet? for me there is already too much info on the web about this stuff. but maybe its good to have a book and read a couple of pages each night... maybe it like "pushes u forward", or?
and that oil sound a bit suspicious does it smell good?

Sorry guys, I haven't tried the clary sage oil yet!

It certainly says a lot that can't be found easily on the internet. It goes into some detail on the history of lucid dreaming research, which isn't covered in EtWoLD or here on Dreamviews, and I found it really interesting.

And I find it does help to have a good LDing book to read a little of each night. It really motivates me, and gives me some great ideas on LDing. Since starting to read this book two nights ago, I've had an LD, albeit a short one, each night.

As for the clary sage oil, I'll hopefully get the chance to try it before I go on holiday next saturday. I wouldn't say it smells nice, but I wouldn't say it smells bad either. From what I've found out about it, whether it smells nice or not differs between individuals.

I'll definitely be reading my books over the three weeks I'm away, but I probably won't be able to report back until I get back. I'll do my best to try out the oil and the tape before I leave.

      I'll get reading!

The Lucid Dreaming Kit is excellent, glad someone else has actually brought it I remember buying that pack about 7 months ago, its really cool listening to the tape while looking at that visualisation card, its helpful and relaxing to get into that dream state...hope you enjoy the book.

I used the oil but would love to get some more, its a very nice smell.

let us know what you think about the Lucid Dreaming Tape.

If anyone's interested in the age of the books, I read in The Lucid Dreaming Kit that 'Creative Dreaming' by Patricia Garfield came out in 1974. The copy of The Lucid Dreaming Kit that I have was published in 2000, but I believe it first came out in 1998. 'The Lucid Dreamer' by Malcolm Godwin came out in 1994.

Another good Lucid Dreaming book is 'Lucid Dreaming' by Stephen LaBerge. It's shorter and less detailed than his other book, Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming, but it comes with a CD with some useful exercises, as well as two 'Trance Induction' tracks. I had great success with the trance induction, and thoroughly recommend it.

If you want the definitive book on Lucid Dreaming, the granddaddy written before all the other books, you should check out “Lucid Dreams” by Celia Green, it took me ages to find but i managed to find it one day in a very old bookshop…..

      http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/viewtopic....ia+green#168941

Its an amazing book, written before Lucid Dreaming became a postmodernist subject, the perspective is beautiful.

Actually, I think that book was mentioned in The Lucid Dreaming Kit, and I was going to look into getting it.

Could you do me a favour, and check the ISBN number on your copy. I've found what looks like the same book available on Amazon.co.uk:

      http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0...6595676-9559855

But I need a way of checking whether it's the right one. Thanks.

The Lucid Dreaming Kit is great. The book is very informative, and although it contains a small amount of information covered in EtWoLD, it also contains a library of other knowledge. It contains a lot of ideas that haven't actually been brought up much on this board, so I'll share some of that with you tomorrow.

It's currently midnight here, and once more I shall embark on the fuzzy voyage through sleep and dreams, and I will have a lucid dream.

I'll be using the clary sage oil, applied to the third eye area, but not the lucid dreaming tape (I'll probably use that some other time this week.)

I have every intention of having a long, controlled, and vivid lucid dream.

And with that, I bid you all goodnight. May you all have the lucid dreams you so desire.

The sleeping smiley turned into the dancing orange. XD

Well, last night was a bit of a failure. I don't rememebr having an LD, and in fact, I didn't remember a dream at all until I tried WBTB. Whether this was my fault or not, I'm not sure. I'll try the oil again some other night. The oil might have been relaxing though, as I did feel quite relaxed, more so than usual.

It's possible that I had an LD, but simply didn't remember it, but I doubt it; my LDs are usually easy to remember.

Tonight I'll try the Lucid Dreaming tape that comes with the kit. I've had great success with the trance induction CD that comes with LaBerge's 'Lucid Dreaming,' so I'll probably have as much success with this.

The tape is really helpful, hope you enjoy it...... it would be cool to talk about it once you have listened to it.

Hope you have the same success as you did with the Laberge CD

The code on the back of the book is the same as the one on Amazon (is there any book that Amazon doesnt have?)

      laberge's book 'lucid dreaming'

      Hey dudes
I have Stephen Laberge's book 'Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming' but got overwhelmed with all the exercises, although I know it's supposed to be a classic.
Does the CD that comes with the book 'Lucid Dreaming' help with dream recall, or cut down on other exercises that r in the other book cos I was considering buying it.
      Thanks from

Hey dude, it isn't necessary to read EWOLD cover to cover (though I ensure you it will greatly increase your understanding of lucid dreaming and hence increase your lucid dream frequency). You do not have to do each exercise. The book is neatly organized so you can access the table of contents to refer to any particular confusion you might have without having to do all those pesky exercises!
