Why is it you can do things you cant in real life...

Like in a dream, even if it is not lucid.. You can always seem to do something that you cant do when you are awake?
E.g I cant swim, but all the times in all my dreams, i can. And i am great at it.
I can speak different languages and such but i cannot when i am awake..

I wonder how dreams work... ?

I am sure i will get some answers after being on this forum for a while/

Dreams are not restriced to waking life physics. I'm sure you have seen people swim in movies/real life etc, so you have that memory and can perform it in your dream.
And about the languages... since you are really just "talking" with yourself when you dream, the language makes perfect sense to you. Even though if you remembered the words you used and repeated them to someone while awake, they probably wouldnt understand you.

This is just my opinion, I'm no expert

      dream

It is interesting trying to see if there is some kind or rules for dreaming.

Usually people say that dreams are based on beliefs. But this seems limited to lucid dreaming.

In regular dreams I can do things that I don't believe I can do in waking life. For example when dreaming I am excellent skater, swimmer, and levitator!

Another theory is that dreams are based on desire. But when I dream that I'm a lawyer or a dog, I'm not aware of any conscious desire to be either

It seems dreams mix together a lot of elements including experiences you've observed in waking life, fictional events you've read, or seen in movies, plus sleeping desires.

well Stephen LaBerge said a lot about that kind of stuff. he said that pretty much if you dont believe you can do it in real ife, you cant do it in a dream... but i think he was talking about lucids. i am pretty sure dreams are scenarios that go over in our head, sort of like little things that might happen that our brain makes up so we can be ready for something, sort of like someone dying in a dream. but what do i know.

we interpet the world through certain sensory processes overseen by our mind. the foremost probably being imagination (the creation of meaningful images).

so if you have been exposed to something, you can imagine a fairly realistic replication of it while dreaming.

for instance, i've never had sex in waking life, but i can imagine what its like, so when i dreamt of having intercourse in a lucid my mind could easily create a reasonable facsimilie..

As everyone else has previously indicated, dreams have nothing to do with the physical world. Your mind is on a kind of 'autopilot' and real life events, situations, or everyday reality are not set in stone. It's wonderful, eh?

Because that is what makes them fun!!

After all, if Dreams were reality, I would probably go beserk, because I would have no freedom from mean people (people at my school, just so you know). Dreams help you escape reality.
