over the past couple nights when ive been drifting off to sleep, ive noticed that my brain goes through this problem solving "protocol".I'll be thinking about something while im falling asleep, and my mind automatically goes through a bunch of scenarios regarding that thought. and everytime, it seems my brain is trying to "solve" whatever im thinking about. keep in mind, this is all happening while im falling asleep, so i have no control over it. the only reason i know im doing this is because ive rolled around in my bed while my head was doing this, then i realized it was happening. it was like i caught my brain thinking on its own.
Is this happening because my brain has no stimuli to comprehend, so its problem solving skills are honed?
Does anyone know anything about this? does this sort of thing happen to anyone else?

thanks for reading

I think my mind does this sometimes as well. I'm not sure but I think its when your subconscious starts to prepare for you to dream.

My mind needs to wander to sleep, so it will make up a hole bunch of random scenes in my mind before I eventually fall asleep. Sometimes, it is problem solving.

In fact last night it was problem solving probably because I read this thread I don't remember what the scenarios are right now, all I remember is that about 4 times I snapped out of the trance and thought "Oh yeah I'm trying to sleep."

It means like an artificial plot thing in a story that comes out of nowhere and saves the day. (No offence Deus )

Anyway, the subconscious is primitive, and when you give it a problem to work on, it keeps on working on it until it figures out some answer to its satisfaction. That's why, when you can't think of somebody's name or something, later on it will just pop into your head, because you gave the subconscious a problem and it worked on it until it figured it out. And that's also why you should never ask yourself negative things, like "Why did I do such a stupid thing?" because your subconscious will keep trying to find the answer and may come up with something bad, like "Because you're an idiot.", and then you tell yourself that. You should always ask positive things that you want to know the answer to, like "How can I do (blank) better?" and the subconscious will work on it and give you the answer. (I ask myself how to LD better all the time tho and my stupid subconscious doesn't help me at all.)

So I think you have become aware of this process "Caught your brain thinking on its own" as you say. That is actually pretty cool, I think. I guess I have sort of done that as I was drifting off to sleep and get woken up, I mean suddenly realize I am thinking about something I wasn't consciously aware of.

I've experienced my brain problem-solving before, occasionally to the extent that I sleep very fitfully. I'll be lying in bed, and I can't stop thinking about how to fix this or do that. Most often, its the result of feverish sleep because I'm sick, but it's also happenned on its own.

The rest of the time, it's sort of a mixed blessing for me. It certainly comes in useful, especially since I like to tinker with and fix things. However, it can preoccupy my mind when I'd much rather be focusing on other things. I guess thats life.
Well life is short, so love the one ya' got, 'cause you might get run over or you might get shot.
