Why do you think some people even have the ability to lucid dream in the first place? It all just seems to crazy sounding to be true. Of course I have them and all, but it just blows my mind that I do. It has made me wonder about alot of other things and it has made me a little more open minded on stuff I would've dismissed as psycho babble before all of this. There has to be a reason we can do this.Don't you think?

Well, recently I've been asking myself something similar, but the other way round: why aren't all our dreams naturally lucid? When you think about it, consciousness is something we experience everyday, whereas unconsciousness in non-lucid dreams is quite weird...Why would your mind (re)create situations where you merely have no control....?
And I agree that getting myself into Lucid Dreaming has made me a more open-minded person.

There is yet another thing to ponder. That's a good point. It's a very mysterious thing.

A sort of psychic related answer to that would be that you astrally project every night but only on some nights do you take your consciouness with you. That would explain why we lucid dream and also why we're not lucid dreaming every night. Of course, that's only a theory. If we dismiss astral projection and OBEs then the answer could just be that your mind tries to keep you unconscious while dreaming so that you'll stay focused on reality and not in your dreams. Consider you were conscious all the time... It would be kind of confusing to a lot of people. How would you distinguish reality from your dreams if they were exactly the same kind of experiences?

if i could anser that i would be a much beter psychologist but the way i see it the brain cant shut down because it mite not start up but if we are conscious all the time we would be insane and start killing people so the brain made it this way so we are not vegetables or crazy

that or god did it i have to say god is looking good

For me, being conscious (in a dream) means you know you are dreaming. In all our non-lucids we take the dream as reality, which is confusing....when you wake up. That's why I'm not sure I understand what you are saying...

When we are dreaming we do accept the dreams as real while we are sleeping, but when we wake up we then know it was just a dream. Still it would be easier to confuse regular dreams with past experiences or memories. When lucid you know it is a dream the whole time even when asleep and upon waking. I agree with krookedking on this one, but since it is the "norm" to have regular dreams and not lucid ones it still just blows my mind as to why one can even do it to begin with.

krookedking what I was saying is that if we went to sleep and were imediatelly conscious and kept that consciousness through the whole night than we would be confused about reality. If since you were a kid you had always been conscious even when dreaming, would you be able to tell which would be real, wether dreams or waking life?

RC's would have been invented much earlier in that case. And made an important part of our culture.

Look up Hutton's Paradox; It's close to what you're saying.

They would have been invented to distinguish one reality from the other, but people would still not be able to distinguish what reality was because thy would have two different types of reality! Maybe I'm not making my point clear... If you were conscious 24/7 you wouldn't know what to think of real as. Even though this scenario is not happening, some people wonder if reality is in dreams or in waking life. If we were all concious while dreaming, it would be even harder to tell. Yes, Lunalight, that's exactly the point!

That's an interesting theory. I think the act of laying down each night for bed might give a clue (I'm not being sarcastic, I'm just kind of thinking out loud).

Someone wise once said that our consciousness is a gift from our subconscious to let us *think* that we're in control. Perhaps our 'reality' is just the lucid dream of actual existence.... (It's really quite Matrixy, if you think about it....)

Yes, but you could also think that you were disconnecting from the matrix in your mind to connect to reality, for example. Or maybe people would feel kind of trapped between these two worlds, one that was always changing and another that was stable. And which of them was real.

I'm not in good position to discuss this anyway since I believe the physical world is not necessarilly reality.
