I went to bed 4 hours ago attempting sleep paralysis, by 2:00 UK time my whole body except my head had gone numb, i waited and nothing else happened, now i cannot get to sleep at all, i'm tired, i'm pissed off and i don't have time to sleep during the day, could trying these techniques be affecting my sleep?

Its 4:10 in the morning here!

and i've noticed that whenever i try and induction technique that requires being aware when entering the dream, i can never fall asleep, its impossible, its like theres a mental block

I've encountered the same thing before, I just roll over and try to go to sleep naturally, but I did have to take a sleep aid to get to sleep once last week. it sucked. Lucky for me I was on spring break.

WILD and other such methods usually require a lot of practice! I really wouldn't try such induction methods on nights where you have things to do the day after (at least until you are sufficiently skilled). Another thing to remember is that doing a WBTB then doing a WILD greatly improves your chances. Check out billy-bobs tutorial.

Ya I have the same problem... for me I think it's because I try to do a WBTB but since I go to bed at like 2 or 3am I end up getting up for the WBTB when it's already bright out so it's tricky falling back asleep.

I think I psych myself out too. You might have the same problem as me which is that since I've already had this problem once (not being able to get back to sleep), everytime I try a WBTB i get worried I won't be able to get back to sleep etc etc and I never can.

well i got to sleep at 7AM and woke at 10AM, i'm still pretty knackered, ok my problem with WBTB is that to wake up i always need to use my alarm, i don't want to be too aware when trying this either, i've tried before using my alarm and i always can't get to sleep because i'm to aware, my mattress is years old aswell, i complained to my dad and trying to convince him to get me a new one, it kills my back sometimes, i might aswell be lying on bare springs, thanks for the advice anyways

SP happens best when you don't try to have it. sleep on your back also. Also, SP does not = LDs.

try drinking a little bit of caffeine about 3-4 hours before bed. tea or coffee

This sounds right. I don't know how to explain it but you need to relax and not be so anxious. Lying in bed for 10-20 minutes straight is a lot longer than people think and it can be frustrating if you're not patient.

Try falling asleep for 30 minutes. If it doesn't work by then, then just stay up for the rest of the day and try it the next morning. Your body is bound to get too tired to resist.
