      sleep paralysis

does anyone know what the body Physically does to stay paralyzed during sleep?

I've had problems on several occasions where I finally get lucid and then while trying to do things in a dream I end up doing them with my physical body.

-tried rubbing my hands to stabalize a dream and actually woke myself up.

-Wanted to freak out a dream character by sticking my head through a fish tank and blowing bubbles. When I took a deep breath underwater i actually did it. Then when I pushed my lips out to blow the bubbles I physically did that as well ending my dream.

-tried to run really fast and kicked my legs in bed.

I'd imagine the brain must produce some sort of chemical during sleep to keep your body still. Is there any kind of food or supplemenet I can try?

It has to do with your consciousness. We normally aren't conscious when we go to sleep, so when we have normal dreams we aren't aware that they are manifestations of our mind, so there's little chance of waking.

When we ARE lucid, however, we are aware of this so it's a lot easier to wake up. You just have to learn to keep in mind that you're dreaming, but also to forget about your actual physical body that is laying in bed simultaneously. It's a thin line. If you think about your body too much, you'll wake up. If you forget totally about the fact you're dreaming, you'll lose lucidity.

I'm not really thinking about my body though. Some times when this happens I am well into a lucid. I mostly walk around observing for awhile to stabalize myself. It usually takes awhile before I actually try to do something active.

I'm pretty sure I do this during normal dreaming as well. Sometimes when I wake up my sheets are flipped over or off the bed completely. I have even woken up with bruises and no recollection of how I had gotten them.

Sleep Paralysis is very very wierd for me, I can always move during it. Once i woke up and didnt move or anything and felt it I just couldnt feel my body, I was sure my legs were crossed but when I looked they were apart it was very cool. But I just jumped out of it cause I felt the need to stretch.

I noticed I only feel SP if I fall asleep on my back wich is not my normal sleeping position.

Basically all that happens during SP is that your body is asleep. And since your body is asleep it is uncappable of moving. This is to prevent you from moving during your sleep so that you do not get injured. When it is not working properly that is when you have sleep walking etc.

When you are aware but your body is asleep that is SP in other words your mind has awoken before your body has. It is a natural occurence and I do not thinkg there is any food or something that you could buy to induce SP.

      I know.

That's why it sucks. I wake up with bruises on my body and I have even slammed my head into the wall. It's not fun.

Woah Woah you wake up with bruises on your body from you moving around at night? I read that if you are moving around you are not dreaming and if you are snoring you are not dreaming either. But him waking up with bruises and such >_>
