      Dying in Dreams

I usually don't talk about this dream much, I had it many years ago, but the memory of it still burns in my mind and the strange thing is, when every I think of it I still feel the pain from it.

I was walking down a cobble stone street and it was foggy. I was wearing gentleman's clothing, including a top hat. The sound of my footfalls echoed as I walked. I felt a presence behind me right before a hand roughly grabbed my throat and pulled my head back. I felt bite of a knife go into my right side and it go into my lung. I fell forward and felt dully, my head strike the cobble stones. My body began to feel cold and I couldn't breath. The burning sensation in my side began to dull as well as my vision. I tried to push my self up off the ground, but my arms collapsed and I fell back to the ground. I couldn't breath and I felt myself getting weaker. My vision kept getting darker and darker.

When I finally awoke, I was covered in sweat and I hurt in the place where I was stabbed and where my head hit the ground. The dream was so vivid that even now I still feel it now, even as I write.

Wow!!! That seems very intense man...you made me feel your pain too

The times I have died were different(like my bus falling from a cliff). I do remember a dream I had once were my cousin broke into his dad's house and I, for some reason was there supposedly guarding it. He had a gun and was telling me to open the cash register(which obviously made no sense as it was a house, not a store) and I was trying but couldn't. He kept getting more and more angry and yelling at me to open it up. I think I finally was able to do it, and he got the money and pointed the gun at me. Then he said something like: "I'm sorry but I have to do this" and pulled the trigger.

The bullet hit me in the stomach and felt nothing like I would have imagined getting shot would feel. I started to feel cold too, but I decided to fight it. I tried getting up and calling 911. I did and then I sort of collapsed to the ground again. I remember how inclined I was to not letting go, how much I fought that feeling.

That's all I remember. I didn't die, but only cause I fought with all of my being. Your dream reminded me of that time...
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

Well, I do believe in past lives, and that was a really intense dream. Probably one of the most vivid dreams that I have ever have. Enough that I can recall it almost a decade later.

I was told long ago that it's impossible to die in your dreams. You always wake up before the actual death.

I've died in my dreams and as you guys have already shown ... its perfectly possible.
      But definitely not pleasant

Well I've died in a dream and it was one of most pleasant dreams I've ever had (I refer you to 'Longest Dream Ever?'). It's certainly not impossible to die in dreams, but there is the question of whether particularly vivid dreams can cause death in real life too... I've heard of a few cases like that (e.g. recuring nightmares, person decides to end it all and tells someone next time they'll jump off the cliff in the dream etc., next morning they arefound dead in bed)

Nah old wive's tale in my opinion
Unless the person has a bad heart already!
Thats like having great sex at the ripe age of 95 and having a heart attack. Does that make sex a killer?

Besides the dying dreams I had were reoccurring and looping.
In other words, I would fall, hit the ground, black out and relive the whole thing over again. The actual death seemed to happen.
And this would go on all bloody night!!
This was before I could induce lucid dreams so there was no comfort in controlling it

I wouldn't rule it out - just as falling from a high building you die from shock not impact, dying in dreams you most certainly die of shock rather than the act of dying in dreams.

Back, sorry I didn't answer sooner, but I was out in the field for the week.

Yeah, I've died quite a few times in dreams. Also, I've hit the ground too when I have fallen in dreams. One time, I dreamed I was falling and I work up right before I hit the floor. I had fallen off the top bunk and my younger brother was watching me fall. We still laugh about that one today.

The only way I think you can die in a dream is shock...or perhaps pure terror, but I suppose the only way to really terrorize yourself is if you had something real wrong with you and you couldn't wake up from dreams while scared or something. Of course, I don't know why you should worry about dying in dreams. There's alot less ways you can die while dreaming than you can while awake (electrocution, murder, tripping up real bad, falling off high things).

I'm just saying there is a possiblility in the case of people with severly traumatic recurring lucid nightmares. I myself don't worry about it at all. Oh, and by the way Kaniaz and Techboy, I've started using Knoppix now so there is another Linux-using Britpn on the forums...

Dying in dreams fascinates me. I used to have dreams all the time of this peticular cliff that sometimes i would fall off of, and sometimes not...one time i fell down and didn't die (and wake up) when i hit the bottom...but rather lived down there for YEARS.

I once had this dream that after i would jump off this cliff in the clouds, and hit the bottom, that i would re-spawn, back to where i jumped and jump again...in cycles...for hours...it was exhilerating.

There was only one time where i died in my dream, it was the scariest thing in the world.

I was sitting on the front deck of our house. It was beautiful out, early august, the most incredible sky i ever saw, it was bright blue with clouds that looked as if they came out of paintings. We were listening to the radio when it suddenly started getting fuzzy.. they were yelling, IT WAS LAUNCED! IT IS COMING! so many loud voices, i paniced. In the far distance over the beautfiul green trees, I saw a large orange red black Explosion, it looked like death in itself, i knew (the way you know things in dreams) that a nuke hit NY, and since i was in NJ, i was in danger. i quickly jumped up and stood behind my father, who was also up. I saw, and could almost feel something coming closer, the trees in the distance got blurry and shook. The wave of energy approached. It finally hit. I first saw my dad fly back and hit the wall.... then i felt it... it was the strangest experience i ever had... i felt both pain and numbness at the same time.. i felt myself hit the wall... i felt like i was burning.. yet also that nothing was real.. i was fading... my mind was fading... i tried to hold on to conciousness, but it didn't work, everything darkened... i was worried about my father, i knew i was dying... i felt the sick feeling, the one of numbness and the one of non-reality, for one last time... before everything ended..

i woke up and jumped out of bed.. i was sweating.. i was terrified... what happened to my father, i ran downstairs.. everyone was there.. i realized i had a dream.. i calmed down in about an hour and went about my day.

That was scary, but was even scarier was that a week later my father and I were watching television, my mother and sister left on vacation in cape cod, my dad stayed home to work and would go up later with me, i decided to stay with him this year, normally i went up as well... when the power went out.. this was the NY blackout. it affected our of NJ as well... So my father and I got the radio and went out onto our front porch... this is when i got a sense of Deja vous... i was terrified, i remembered my dream... thankfully, nothing happened... but during those hours of blackout, i thought, almost knew, that i was going to die.

Doesn't facinate me much anymore. I've had it happen so often, that it isn't funny. I still have nightmares from Iraq, we had a lot of close calls and it was amazing that no one ever died in my unit. I don't have those dreams as much now, but I will relive those close calls, except they go wrong.

Does make make me week-minded? Or a coward?

Cool, kind of like the movie Groundhog day, with Bill Murray. Man, that movie is great!!!

If you didn't feel pain when you hit the ground then you only enjoyed the cool part, falling. You are lucky.

      P.S. Was it lucid?

hi i just signed up. i no i wont be around 2 tlk much, but..
i actually think you guys are lucky to have such cool dreams. mine are so boring and the most random you will have ever heard (cept for one. it was a little scary, and takes a half hour to tell).
i think having a dream of dying would be awesome (unless it was just falling off a cliff or something). do you think theres anything that happened in your lives that made those dreams happen? some reason why it keep re-occuring? hmm and come to think of it, are you always up most of the night or do you have no problem sleeping? ok well thats about all i gotta say. plz comment, even if i dont get back to ya in a while. thanks!

Yes, I believe some of my dreams are because of the things I have experienced in my life. I can't speak for the others though.

interesting post, I just found this board today actually.

I've had several lucid dreams in my lifetime but haven't seriously practiced it before. planning to start now.

I have 2 dreams that i remember that apply to this topic.

the one dream that I died in, I was walking over a crust of hardened lava (with molten lava underneath) with a girl.

we came to a small crack in the crust, with lava showing underneath, she easily jumped over it. I went to do the same thing but right when I jumped the gap widened and became too large to jump, so i fell right in the lava.

the last image from the dream, is me looking up at the girl who is looking down the crack at me, then i got hotter and hotter and woke up from it, with my skin feeling burning hot all over my body.

I remember thinking 'oh shit, there's no way to survive this' which basically sealed the deal, i felt my skin/meat vaporizing before i awoke.

in another dream, or rather set of dreams, I used to have the standard 'falling dream' quite a lot when i was young (15ish), I had it many many times, and every time i would wake up right before hitting the ground. frequently i would be waken up by my mother to get up for school right at that moment, it happened so many times that i started to suspect i was either looping, or holding in the 'falling state' until woken, it seemed to incredibly co-incidental to be 'saved' from hitting the ground that many times by outside circumstances.

then eventually, i had a dream where i actually hit the ground..... but nothing happened, one second i was falling, and the next second i was sitting on the ground thinking "well, that didn't hurt".

that dream, where i hit the ground, was my very fist lucid dream (that i remember), after i hit the ground i spent the rest of the dream flying nistead of falling, and had several flying dreams shortly after that event. I also have never had the falling dream again since then.

I've died in my dreams, best dreams I ever had.

the most rescent would be in the cockpit of an air liner.
I was sitting there and the plane took off and proceeded too go up and down and then after a while like a rollercoaster strait down and seeing the ground close in the plane crashes nose first into the ground.
I black out and then feeling like my eye lashes have burned together i stumble over a scorched circle, flames still here and there and I know Everyone died in the crash. then I wake up

then in another dream I get shot I think about 5 times while I'm sitting down at a hotdog stand and I get thrown out of the chair and while I lay dying I decide too end my dream and wake up.

Í've fallen through ceilings and off of towers made from junk, all very unstable.

I love getting scarry dream there the ones I remember.

the only realy scarry thing I ever experianced was then I became lucid and tried to rip the new sink from the wall in my room ( the sink isn't there in the real world so that made me lucid ) but when I did I felt vibrations all over my body and then the dream world started too join in and made one of those matrix like ripples and knocked me awake and there I was still vibrating.
is that what happens when you focus your attention on one point ?
When beholding the tranquil beauty and brilliancy of the ocean's skin, one forgets the tiger heart that pants beneath it; and would not willingly remember that this velvet paw but conceals a remorseless fang

I just had a weird dream, I commited suicide together with an elderly couple. we where touching some electrical stuff but that didnt kill us so we took apart an electrical socket and held the wires. I remember the fear of pain I had and the confusion when I stood up and thought it didnt work but then saw myself, and then sadness because I thought 'wtf did I do '

Reading your post CT gave me an inmense feeling of nostalgia for some reason...I wonder if something like that is what happens when one does that for real...it would be such a depressing moment. Nostalgia combined with regret, guilt, fear, and the feeling of consequence...

yes, it was exactly like that, it was really weird. I was scared to death, afraid of the pain, but still went trough with it. We tried several things to kill ourselves with first, but they didnt work. And when I discovered I was dead I came to realize that I actually didnt want to do it at all, and I thought something along the lines of 'its all lost'...

Oh yeah, and I remember the colours so much, it was like watching a movie with a sepia filter (I think thats right), so thats brownish/yellowish tones on everything. It was really heavy.

I think I know why I did it, though its got nothing to do with suicide, just my crazy dreams exaggurating heh...

Dreams are not meant to be taken literally, just know that they happen for a reason, perhaps to teach you something you cannot learn in real life...

I think the alternitive motive of this thread is that: "If you think your dead, you are."

      (In waking life of course.)
