I've heared a couple different things on this site about melatonin. From one of the tutorials I heard that it was a bad idea to take melatonin to get to sleep if you are going to attempt a lucid dream as it can make your dream recall worse. Also from another thread I heard that it was very good to take if you want to have a lucid dream... |

Melatonin works most of the time. Then there are those times when it doesn't do anything but make me tired, which is just as good. The usual guarantee is that any dreaming is more vivid. Add some valerian and the dream clarity jumps into high gear. I've had some of the craziest LDs off a melatonin/valerian combo (not overdosing, btw), but it doesn't work for LDs 100% of the time. |

In my experience I haven't seen any real improvement with melatonin. It does help you go to sleep faster, but for me, taking it constantly seemed to develope a dependency where I had trouble sleeping without it. |

Melatonin will put you to sleep, which is good, period. Brain melatonin levels decrease over the night, which at least partially regulates REM period length and frequency and the overall 'deepness' of your sleep. If you get just the right amount you can put yourself in an especially deep sleep for the first 1/2 - 2/3s that results in an extra bountiful REM rebound during the last section of the night - if you overdose, though, you'll suffer deep sleep all throughout the night and wake up zombified (although your body will certainly have had more than enough time to regenerate and reenergize). Try to gauge the scale that melatonin works on you on a normal night (some are sensitive to changes as little as .1mg and some are responsive to dosages in multiples of 3mg, etc) and then ramp it up or down to compensate for the amount of artificial light you expose yourself to after sundown. |
