      State testing technique...

This idea takes the "am I dreaming?" state test to the next level.

If one was to get a tattoo on his wrist that said "Are you dreaming" or "Am I dreaming?" you would get into the habit of asking yourself this. Obviously this is a pretty well known technique, but by having it on your hand you will induce a second sort of state test. When you look down at your hand you will be reminded of dreaming and most likely see the tattoo. It will induce you to ask the question, BUT it will also allow you to test if you are dreaming by just reading the tattoo. If the text is manipulated then you know you are in a dream. This would take a bit to get the connections down but I bet it could be a pretty cool and easy way to state test...On top of that it would be a cool tattoo!

A couple questions about the concept:
-Do tattoos show up in dreams?
-Will the mind remember the position of the tattoo?
-How long will the mind take to introduce tattoos into the dreamworld?
-Anyone want to try it out?

Interesting idea! I'm pretty sure most people would rather use something non-permanent, but that might just be me.

I'll do my best to answer your questions:

Do tattoos show up in dreams?
Of course! After having it become a part of you, so to speak, I imagine it would show up just as the rest of your appearance would. If not, the absence of it would also be a cue.

Will the mind remember the position of the tattoo?
Again, I imagine it would just as the rest of your body does. There may be the odd dream where it isn't, but that logic goes for everything.
How long will the mind take to introduce tattoos into the dreamworld?
Guessing anywhere from 0-4 days, or however long it takes for you to get used to it in real life.

I can't say I'm too keen to get anything permanent, but I'll give it a try with some variations! :p
Have you heard the gypsy hymns in the odd hours of the night?

Well the reason why I thought of this is because I have had become lucid many times when I read things. I mean it is a pretty blatant dreamsign! By tattooing that sort of statement on your arm it would allow you to constantly use text observation as a reality check. IF I was to get a tattoo I think this would be it.
@ Graysong: So I am guessing you do not have any tattoos? I would assume that they do eventually become apart of our dreams, but I cant be sure. Hopefully a tatted up LD'er will come answer this question! So what type of variations are you thinking of?

A ring on your finger can work just as well.

      1) If you have had the tattoo for a while then it will most likely show up in the dream, however it could show up right after getting depends on the individual as sometimes I have appeared in dreams with my hair being in a large afro like it used to be and sometimes I have had a fade so it varies. So the mind tends to use various memories in dreams.

      2) The mind from what I have noticed does a best guess of things and fill's in the gaps so it depends on what your mind thought about the tattoo as to how it would actually appear.

      3) This is a good question involving anything from the real world carrying over into the dream world. And since it varies from thing to thing it is very hard to say.

      4) I'm not to fond of getting a tattoo >_>
