      Dream persons' responses

Ok, I've noticed in a lot of people's dream experiences is that dream characters often take a negative stance towards lucid dreaming. Take a look at this thread: http://www.dreamviews.com/forum/viewtopic....p?p=57966#57966 . Here's a quote:

I've seen this kind of response in most threads where the question is posed to a dream character. Any ideas on why this happens?

My own thoughts on it are:

      - You're subconcious doesn't like the intrusion
      - You're subconcious thinks it's dangerous
      - Lucid dreaming is such an abstract concept, and part of you might think
      that abstract = inherintly bad
      - You understand that most people think that lucid dreaming is "witch craft", or evil/bad, and you're subconcious is trying to create accurate portrayals of external beings to help keep you immersed in the dream world.

That normally happens but I get a lot of other answers too. They are not always negative but they are normally not useful. Some times they are weird or make no sense. Or they give some wild answer that you really don't believe, like one time person said they where an alien.

I think you are right that its abstract but thats not bad. I think its the reason why it so hard to get a normal straight answer though.

      What I think:

As dreams are constructs of the mind, and the dream content/actions that occur are usually shaped by the day's events or habits that you perform, one can expect a person inside a dream, when asked "Am I dreaming?", to answer no, as that is the prevalent answer that is to be expected in real-life.

Your mind can only dream what is to be expected to happen in real-life. Creativity, abnormal conditions, special circumstances, and the nature of dreams themselves can cause dream characters to sometimes reply with creative responses like the one you quoted, or simply "Yes."

"and you're subconcious is trying to create accurate portrayals of external beings to help keep you immersed in the dream world." says it well, kind of. But the quote seems to pseudo-imply that the subconcious has a concious and can "try" something in the first place. It just happens, basically. There's no simple reason why..

At least, that's what I think.

It's interesting nonetheless, that quote. "...And she said 'please don't tell anyone..'" really sticks in my mind. It really.. lol.. it's just a neat experience to hear about.

I know that everything that happens in the dream world is a manifestation of the unconscious, abd should be taken as such. But perhaps they react that way cause that is the way they are meant to react. People will fight for their existance. If you are suddenly proved that you are a nothing but a dream character you will most likely fight that, say that it isn't possible and you are real...

I actually think that that dream girl was enlightened/aware enough to know that it was a dream, and she wasn't real. Perhaps she knew the others would not take these news as well so she didn't want him to tell them...

It is really a very hard subject to tap on, although perhaps psychologist or such with enough knowledge on the subject could be able to say why this happens, on a personal or a general scale ...
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

"This may not be the best thing to try while awake but sometimes it can be effective if in fact you are dreaming. In "reality" if you asked people if we were in a dream, their response would be to accuse you of being insane, yet in the dream realm, it is sometimes a different matter. Usually the dream characters will deny that it is a dream, but they deny it with an air of denial. They usually never question your sanity, and in some cases, they don't even understand what you are saying and disregard you entirely. Also, on rare occasions, someone in your dream will admit that it is in fact a dream." -quoted from consciousdreaming.com

This is exactly what has happened to me when I questioned dream characters. Once, I was in a park and I walked up to a man in a trench coat and asked him if he knew how to fly. He just looked at me, grunted, and kept on walking.

Another time, I was talking to my mom out in the backyard. I asked her, "Are you my real mom?" And she responded with, "Of course I am!"

However, I knew without a doubt that I was dreaming, so I pressed her and asked again, "Are you real?"

She looked down at the ground and slowly said, "No.." She sounded really sad.

Anyways, who knows what dream characters are thinking? I can't wait until I have another lucid dream so I can discover more. ^ ^
I kind of gave up for a bit, but now I'm back just in time for summer.

      Lots of good ideas here.

Also, try to see it this way...

Most of us are much more familiar with our waking lives than sleeping lives. We build anticipated patterns as to how people think and behave in conversation. Like, we frequently see people cover their mouths while coughing, or averting their eyes when in the presence of a PDA.

So, when we encounter a dream character, those influences of expectation from waking life carry on into our dreams. Thus...if you dare call some dream character to be fake and nonexistent, no wonder they say "That's BS man, Jerk off!" because that's what you may expect in waking life, subconsciously.
naturals are what we call people who did all the right things accidentally

Dream characters arn't always so sour about you interrupting their parade.
      In one dream:
Me: "It's not Christmas. I must be dreaming. I think I'm going to wake up now."
Brother (to Mother): "No, don't. Me & Mum will extend the dream so you can enjoy lucidity."
      Me:"Oh yeah, thanks."

Well you need to admit that dream characters' responses are different from other people's dream characters' responses, but most seem to have an underlying motive.

By reading posts here by Truthbearer and some others, have caused me to believe dreaming are a unaccountable phenomenon, who is difficult to explain just with science.
Before, I only saw on dreaming as mental stimulation in the brain, but reading about such paranormal things like this make it difficult with a so simple theory.

Maybe I must realise that it is a lot of things we don't know, and that paranormal phenomena is a part of the reality...
      Are you dreaming?
