No, it is not true. It cannot lower your serotonin, or cause a chemical imbalance that would lead to depression.
Lucid dreaming can make you depressed only if you have an unhealthy approach towards it, for example:
1) avoiding confronting problems in real life by trying to escape into the dream world ( which can happen with any hobby )
2) Trying to replace real life experiences with dream experiences, for example hanging out with people in a dream instead of in real life.
If you try to replace your waking life with your dream life you can become depressed.
But if you look at LD's as something that you add to your life, then it cannot cause any depression.
In fact it can make you very happy, peaceful, balanced. It can make you more aware and mindful in real life. It can give you a wonderful feeling of excitement and wonder, as you imagine the wonderful experiences you will have when lucid dreaming, or remember some of these awesome experiences that you already had, or the most amazing feelings you can imagine during the lucid dreams themselves.
