      Melatonin: Do Pills Increase Chance Of Cancer?

      Melatonin has been shown by a number of studies to significantly inhibit breast cancer in animals and tissue cultures. Preliminary studies in two new independent research programmes suggest a link between meditative practice and increased melatonin as measured by the major metabolite (six-sulphatoxy-melatonin) in the urine.

      In the first study of its kind, Ann Massion and others at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre recorded the difference between melatonin levels of eight experienced meditators and a control group of eight non-meditators. They found a higher level of melatonin in meditators than in non-meditators.

      Neuroscientist Ranjie Singh at Saybrook Institute, Western Ontario Research Park, used a similar technique in a study of 12 healthy meditators and another three with cancer. He sought to learn if a combination of mantra intonations, visualization, specialised breathing and deep meditation could stimulate the pineal gland, as measured by melatonin. When differences in urinary levels on a single day were compared before and after practice of the combined techniques, all subjects showed increases in melatonin, varying between seven and 1,000 per cent.

      Based on these results, Singh suggested that endogenous stimulation of the pineal should be ultimately healthier and more effective than ingestion of melatonin tablets, which only temporarily increases melatonin. He is now measuring tumour size changes in cancer patients who are using the technique daily. The team at the University of Massachusetts has launched a long-term study of the effect of meditation on women with early stage breast cancer.

      Italian physician Paolo Lissoni has achieved intriguing results in administering 40-milligram daily doses of melatonin to cancer patients with advanced tumours and life expectancies of less than six months. His work was described by William Regelson in the June 1996 issue of Let's Live.

      the title sounds like melatonin is responsible for increased instances of cancer.

      A while ago i did some research on studies involving serotonin and melatonin. Apparently, women who worked night shifts had an increased probability of breast cancer. Because serotonin is converted to melatonin in darkness, and night-shift workers were always exposed to light, including their sleep during the day, it can be inferred that a lack of melatonin is responsible for an increased risk of breast cancer.

      im certain simelar studies can be found easily on google (google scholar maybe), thats where i got them.

      That is very interesting. I'm going to look further into this to uncover which outcome of research is correct.

      So it's safe to say that melatonin PREVENTS, or helps to ward off, these diseases.

      How did you come up with that wacky conclusion? Did you even read the press release you copy and pasted? It didn't say anything about melatonin increasing the risk for cancer!

      That being said, your pineal gland produces only 100mcg (MICROGRAMS, 1000mcg = 1mg) at night. So people are stupidly taking 3mg pils (30x the natural physiological dose), just because those are the size of the pills they come in. Only take 100-300mcg (micrograms) to be safe, since that's all you need to get the effects. More is not better/stronger. They do sell it in that dose, or buy 1mg pills and split them into 1/4 (quarter) pieces.

      No, REMemberDreaming You misunderstand sweetshoes18, who did understand the article. The problem is with unfortunate wording of the topic title, that make it look like melatonin increase chance of getting cancer, while the intent was increase chances of recovering from cancer.

      If this is true, i'm glad i never took any of this stuff, i don't see why some people need to rely on the use of these things to get good recall, its down to you yourself at the end of the day, why depend on some drug to do the work for you, thats just laziness, i have no probelm if people experiment with it but constant use has to be bad for you in some way.
