      What is a Schema?!

Chapter 5 in exploring the world of lucid dreaming talks all about schemas -- but this is really bugging me because i have no idea what they are...

      can anyone fill me in?

      hope this helps

schemas are described as hierarchically arranged, coordinated sets of abstract ideas about self, the world, and relationships. These schemas are said to underlie and maintain one's belief system and automatic thoughts.

I understand what pope said ... but don't understand the potential use it might have.

Think of a schema as a kind of an outline. When you begin writing a report, the first thing you do is create an outline. That provides a framework in which you can expand and add to.

In LaBerge's example, the mind has basic schema's, or outlines, if you will that become active. The mind then fills in the rest to form a dream.

For example, the schema related to flying may become active. Your mind then fills in the feeling of acceleration and wind in your face.

I wrote a paper on schema's but I deleted it . If you are a programmer, think of it as objects in classes.

Yeah, when I was in college, a schema was used to describe the layout of a database.

It's something like a group of words...?

I think it means that if if I say Ocean, the schema would be salt water, boats, fish, water...
