You'll find people with such ability rare. People who have already tried polyphasic sleep, however, do report having REM sleep earlier, even after abandoning the polyphasic schedule completely.
It is hard to know for sure, but being a lightsleeper could make you wake up easily from a lucid dream if you dont take care.
Once you become lucid, try to do it progresively: don't stop everything at once. Instead, continue to "play your role" in your dream for a while, until you feel it's ok to take over control.
You can also try stabilization methods such as focusing on your hard, spinning, running, or doing something you really enjoy. Dream control takes a bit of creativity: you must find clever ways to overcome difficulties! Finally, try reading lucid dream journals, as it will help a lot.
