Marijuana and dreaming (Personal experiences only please)

So I've been an avid pot smoker for probably the past 3 years or so and I'd say that at this current point I'm probably at the peak of my smoking with getting high 3 times a day being a slow day. In addition to this, being in college, I'm somewhat of an alcoholic usually getting drunk 3-4 nights a week.

So, with all personal opinions and everything aside I'd like to bring up my experiences with lucid dreaming. I've done it off and on since I was in high school and recently I've stuck with it more than ever. In my dream journal, I picked back up at the date 10/20/07. I should also inform you that prior to this, I've only had about 3-4 lucid dreams and I always lost lucidity or woke up within the first 5-15 seconds.

So, in these past 17 nights of sleeping I'm going to break down some quick things I've noticed in my dream journal. Of these 17 days I've only had 3 days where I did not remember any dreams the next morning (remember I drink every thursday-saturday night as well as some tuesdays). Out of those 14 nights I remembered dreams, I had 5 different lucid dreams, each one with me gaining more and more control grounding myself and what not.

Now to get to the question I have, if I were to say quit smoking weed for a week what kind of impact would this have on my dreaming? From what I've read, my dreams would be more vivid with more details and I'd remember more dreams but my most recent track record has put up numbers I've never seen before. So I'd like to ask for personal experiences with quitting smoking and how it affected your lucid dreams/dream recall.

If you fit into this criteria, I'd like to ask you how often you remembered/had lucid dreams while you were smoking weed (and how much weed you smoked daily) as how many dreams you remembered/had lucid dreams after you quit?

edit - I'd also like to mention that I've read and searched through most all of the marijuana threads on this board and its hard to gauge responses since half the time I feel people are talking out of their ass and don't know what they are talking about. For that reason I would like to keep the responses to people that absolutely know what they are talking about.

I"ve been smoking marijuana for about 7 years now and I usually do it about as regularly as you...in my personal experiences I've noticed that if I go to sleep sober I have much better chances of attaining lucidity and having more vivid dreams. But I can attain those levels if I go to bed stoned aswell, just not as much for me.

I'm not sure, but if you quit and have great results, keep us updated. I've been an avid smoker for about 7 years, but I have lucids 2-3 times a week. It's natural for me to realize I'm dreaming and have DILDs. Even when I was younger I would realize it. Also, my recall seems to be good and I remember several dreams each night, but I would have no idea how good my recall would be without the pot since the longest break I've taken in 4 years is 2 days. My dreams range in vividness, but usually one or two per night are decently vivid. Everytime I have a lucid it is 100% vivid and when I wake up, it's like burned in my memory for a while.

It would be AWESOME to know that if I managed to quit, that my dreams would be even better. It's also hard to believe.

From what I've heard though, pot destroys most people's recall. I think that I'm an acception.

Once again, if you decide to go on with this and quit/take a break, keep us updated and maybe PM me results. I've been trying to quit, but find it to be something I can't...

That's pretty unkind actually. What is it about this topic that makes you want to post an unkind comment?

Edit: I missed the question about how we smoke daily... My answer is WAAY TOO MUCH. Enough to cough up resin balls every morning and sometimes throughout the day.

      re weed

When I was as chronic as you it seemed that i didn't remember any of my dreams but that could have been a result of less sleep and less effort put towards dreaming. I did found that once i stopped, even for a night or two i could have more dream recall.

From what your saying, daily dream recall it doesn't seem like it would matter, if you can remember your dreams when you smoke then why would you need to stop? Unless of course you want to stop or are looking for a reason to stop, if thats the case then just stop, but if you worried about your dreaming, from what your saying it doesn't sound like it will make a difference.

A lot of friends say they have crazy vivid dreams on the nights that they smoke weed, so I think my experiences maybe different, one thing that I do remember is that I did once read that smoking herbs can prevent dreaming and that seemed to be the time when I stopped remembering so who knows.

Another thing that i have noticed is that when i smoke its usually at night, and i usually stay up later so that could be part of it too.

I recently quit smoking pot just a few months ago. I would say I probably smoked about as much as you, 3 times a day (on a slow one) for a little more then 3 years. After I quit I noticed a sharp increase in my dream recall, which slowly returned to normal after about a month, but during that month I could remember several dreams every night, with a few lucids.

Marijuana has always impaired my dream recall significantly if I've been smoking everyday. Currently I'll have around a bowl on the weekends, and it usually makes me have very strange dreams and I can recall them pretty well. Its when you start smoking to much when the pot really begins to interfere with your recall (which, of course, interferes with your ability to lucid dream). When I was smoking heavily I almost never remembered my dreams.

My personal advice to you: if you want to learn how to lucid dream and increase your dream recall ability, quit smoking for a few months and when you go back, only do it on the weekends, and even then not to much. If you don't you will never have steady dream recall because you will never be in a steady state of mind. One of the reasons I quit was because I knew I wouldn't be able to take dream recall and lucid dreaming into serious practice if I was high all the time. And, of course, read the techniques on this site. Its essential that you are sober most of the week if you really want to advance with dream recall. If you practice recall and lucid dreaming techniques and your always high, you won't be able to do it sober!

Yeah, now that I think about it, I agree with imported waking life...I think if you put forth the effort, you will succeed either way.

I never remember my dreams when I pass out stoned... I usually remember all the details of dreams when I first wake up, but never after smoking, and passing out.

Though, I've never controlled a lucid dream, and have only had a few, so I dunno how usefull this is

I'd like to mention that last night I passed out around 3 am extremely drunk and I smoked a blunt within 30 minutes of passing out. About 8-9 hours into sleeping I had another lucid..

that makes 15 of the 18 nights I've remembered dreams (multiple) and 6 of those 15 nights have yielded lucid dreams

I've been contemplating taking a week off and seeing the difference in dreams over the course of the week so hopefully I'll do that sometime within the week. But when you have 2 room mates who smoke as heavily as I do as well as people that stop by and smoke us all out its kind of hard to quit or say no to free weed.

      True that

I smoke occasionally. I never remember my dreams. I pass out!

      Red face

I stopped smoking weed 3 weeks ago, normally smoked about a joint/day for the last 6 years or so. I would say my dream recollection has improved, but the nature of the dreams seems similar. I have had some insomnia, but again not affecting the nature of my dreams, just sleep schedule out of whack...

What I find really messes up my dreams much more is alcohol, getting drunk really seems to make my whole sleep cycle go bad. Actually, alcohol is much harder on my body in general than pot (except for aggravating my asthma which is main reason I quit), it makes me wake repeatedly at night, gives me hangovers, which you don't get from weed, and I feel less well rested when I drink too much.

You are probably not going to quit smoking or drinking in the situation you are presently in, but I would advise you not to get totally wasted so often if you are looking to improve dream recollection. Maybe just the heavy stuff on weekends, and weekdays try to cut the partying maybe in half to start and go from there, up or down as you want to. Or try a week on and a week off, keeping your journal and that will give you the real answer for you

As far as lucid dreams go, I haven't had any that I recall, I just kind of stumbled onto this website so I'm a total fraud about lucid dreams. I just know I have better memories lately, and if my dreams seem more vivid, I would attribute that to the improved recollections.

I smoked for a few years, and then quit for a few. I started agian over a year ago, and have been smoking regularly since. I usually get high at least once a day, with sober days here and there. I started smoking weed again, before I started lucid dreaming, so I havent yet tried it while not smoking.

It doesnt seem to have played a major roll for me. Im having lucid dreams, and theyre getting better/longer/more controlled, all while smoking the same amount as I have been.

Thats being said, I decided while high the day before yesterday, that I need to quit again for a while. today is my second day without smoking. I had my longest lucid, with the most control ive had yet, last night.

I'll try to keep this thread updated on how my quiting has effected my dreaming if people want.

I smoke weed all the time and have plenty of dream recall.

During the times when I go without, I notice no real difference.

When I go to bed drunk, I seem to have really intense, crazy non-lucid dreams. These dreams are usually kinda foggy though - And they usually dont make too much sense.

Psychedelics (LSD, Mushrooms etc.) - Well, I usually can't sleep on them.

I do opiates every now and then (percocet, etc.) as well - They tend to aid me tremendously, although I usually try not to sleep on them. I wouldnt suggest this vice of mine to everyone however.
