Exhaustion could cause it, or if you haven't had a chance to really settle down and relax, your mind might just still be in an active state while your body is tired. You mentioned this has happened before, just not so quickly, right? If you're doing something mentally stimulating right before bed (reading an intense book, playing on the computer, having an intellectual discussion), you have to give yourself some time to wind down before going to sleep.
If you're thinking this might happen again, take some time before bed to just relax. Put on some calming music, you could pull out some light reading, do a little drawing, meditate, and just let the cares of the day float off. It can be especially hard if you're stressed out or emotional, but once you go to bed, do what you can do put that behind you. I'm not saying you were stressed out, but if you are, just do what you can to relax before laying your head on the pillow.
