It's probable that you just weren't in the right frame of mind. RCing isn't just about performing some action in hopes to get a certain result. It's about questioning the world around you to see if what's going on makes sense. If it doesn't then it's likely that you're dreaming. Personally, I've always questioned whether or not I'm dreaming first and then move on to perform an RC to confirm my suspicions.
So, I would advise asking yourself some simple questions such as "Where am I?" or "How did I get here?" or "What am I doing?" If the answers don't make sense, there's a good chance that you're dreaming. Don't do them flippantly, though. Take time to look around and see where you are and make an effort to say "Yes, I'm dreaming because..." or "No, I'm not dreaming because..." You'll be less likely to miss an opportunity to become lucid if you're doing more than trying to push a finger through your hand.
In a dream I had, I was flicking a light switch on and off and it wasn't working. I was beginning to get frustrated when all of a sudden I remembered that I had told someone here at DV that light switches often don't work and can be a good sign that you're dreaming. I became lucid right after that, but unfortunately woke up. Just be ready.
