      REM cycles are 90 minutes apart, and start off being relatively short early in the night (about ten minutes) but become longer during the later stages of sleep (40-60 mins). This is why it's best to set your alarm clock for a WBTB later on in your sleep - roughly about 6 hours from when you go to sleep, you should be in your longest period of REM.
