      Language in dreams

I've always wondered about the role of language in dreams, and I thought that I could have some insight since my father immigrated to the US. Since his first language is Swedish, but he used English almost exclusively. I asked him a while ago what language he dreams in. He told me he didn't know! I think that thought (and dreams) should be independent of language, and this tends to lend credibility to that idea, but I would be interested to hear others insight into this.

I also have one experience I can share about bi-lingual dreaming. When I was in high school I took a trip to Germany with my German class, I stayed with a family there and spoke german a high percentage of the time. One night I dreamed in German. The wierdest thing was that my dream cue was that native German speeking people where butchering the language. So clearly I was able to dream in a different language, even though I wan't fluent enough to communicate the content of the dream, I just twisted the language to express myself.

      Any similar experiences?

I'm bilangual (I speak chinese, but not as much as I used to). When I went to China, I had dreams in Chinese. Even after a few months after I got back, I still had some dreams in Chinese.

Last night I had a dream where someone was wearing a shirt that said Ja'ime. I noticed the mistake (It should be J'aime) and told my dad, so I guess its a sign I'm finally absorbing enough French for it to show up in my dreams? I dont know...

When I talk to people from other countries in my dreams, I don't understand them, but what they say comes to me kind of like subtitles. And when I reply, it comes out in their language, but I can still understand it.
