Hey i've been having these wierd occurrences where ill be sleeping and i kind of wake up but cant move. I feel like im really messed up as if i were drugged up or something. Im not a drug abuser so im not on anything at the time. i have expirienced sleep paralysis before when doing WILDS but this is different it just happens sometimes. Almost like a horrible F/A. I dunno can anyone shed some light?

Maybe it IS a false awakening mixed with a nightmare?
What it sounds like to me.

the stuff that's happening while you're waking up is isolated sleep paralysis. the stuff whats going on before you wild is rem atonia. Someone correct me, if i'm mistaken.

Rem Atonia, is a sleeping condition.

REM atonia is paralysis in REM sleep which is what he's used to experiencing during his wilds.

The paralysis he's experiencing when he's waking up is true Sleep Paralysis. Since he's had it on multiple occurrences, it's probably safe to say that he has Isolated Sleep Paralysis...isolated means there is nothing else that's associated with it...ie narcolepsy ect.

      Heya,

You might want to remember as well that dreaming and being awake are not as black and white mutually exclusive as popular belief makes it out to be. There's a grey zone, and there's overlap. Its not uncommon for people to be awake and still be experience dreamimages, sounds or sensations. At the same time, its not uncommon for you to still be dreaming but already be processing external stimuli (like the sensation of lying in your bed and the sounds coming from around you).

Personally, I've never experienced sleep paralysis before, but I have often experienced a state which I call 'dream paralysis'. In this state I am still asleep and dreaming (often lucid at that), but I am unable to move, and I can feel my bed and my body being paralysed. I attribute this to a state of sleep so light that the sensations of my physical waking body are intruding upon my dream, and are getting incorporated in them. This experience can often feel like a screwed up false awakening, in which things may seem very 'waking' like, but at the same time not.

For me, I know the best way to move out of that state is to not focus on the bodily sensations at all, but rather try to turn my mind to percieving the dreamsensations around me (I believe that focussing on dreamsensations tends to renew and strenghten the dream, its a technique I often use to prevent myself from waking up in lucid dreams). I try to think of new dream things to do, rather then focus on the paralysis and try to break it, and with a bit of luck (it doesn't work all the time) find myself out the situation and into a new lucid dream again.

      Anyways, just my 2cents worth,

Yeah I've had that too where you feel really drunk and sort of paralyzed. I think it might be between sleep paralysis and going to sleep. The only way I can describe it is feeling extremelly drunk / physically disabled / high on some sort of hallucinating drugs. I'm almost positive this is part of normal sleep paralysis.

"grey zones" only tend to add to the confusion. If there are actual definitions to the events described, then it's best to give him that.

hypnoponic state is what someone experiences when they're going from sleep to wakefulness.

and hypnagogic state is what someone experiences when they're going from wakefulness to sleep.

both states may be accompanied with hallucinations, sounds, or imagery. since the only key difference, is entering or exiting sleep, most people only describe the events that come with it because it's a lot simpler.

which is only adding to the confusion. he only asked about what was going on while he was waking up.
