      falling

well i am not sure if its true orr not but one of my friends told me that if you dont wake up by the time you hit the ground in a falling dream you can die. I have had a dream where i was falling and i have always woken up right before i fell. But here i am right now alive!...... i wonder if thats why some people die in their sleep.

No one does! It is a misconception. You die do to heart failure or diseases. Not due to your subconscious.

Not true. The only way you can die from a dream is to have a Sci-fi, & have your sash cut off!! At least, that's what my boss said!

All my life I have heard everybody say that they always wake up before they hit the ground. That has always been strange to me, because i always hit the ground. And I'm often falling from high places in my dreams. Infact, falling and hittig the ground without feeling any pain has become one of my most reliable dreamsigns. Im not an experienced lucid dreamer though. But I can assure you, there are no dangers whatsoever in hitting the ground in your dreams. If that were the case, I would have been dead 200 times over.

Try hitting the ground once, its pretty fun.

I wouldn't worry, people die all the time all kinds of different ways in their dreams and then wake up. I've been bitten by a deadly poisonous snake in a dream and as I slowly went numb and "died", I was actually slowly waking up.

Ignorant bliss is an oxymoron; but so is miserable truth.

Yeah, and if it WAS true, why would there be so much evidence to the contrary (people have died in their dreams and woken up)? Some people MAY die from a dream if they are old, sick, and have a weak heart and hit the ground, and they may get a heart attack from the shock. However that's obviously just theoretical because if that DID happen, we wouldn't know anyways

No! In fact, one time a very great Sad Guru of my dream acquaintance found me at a Dream Cocktail Party in a Penthouse Suite and he took me by the arm and we both jumped out of the window together. I would have 'pulled up' into flight, but he firmly held my arm so that we could certainly plunge into the ground, and that is what we did -- we plunged into the ground as though it were water and I could actually see the different layers of soil, clay and rock go by, and eventually the Guru allowed me to pull up and fly out of the ground. So falling is no problem.

And dream death is no problem as I have been 'momentarily' killed many times in dreams. One is never dead for more than 20 or 30 seconds at the most, and then one simply gets up. After some practice with it, one simply isn't fooled any longer by Dream Death and you just keep going no matter what happens.

so, remember, whenever you have the lucky opportunity in a dream to face Death, do it. Your inevitable survival will simply give you that much more greater courage for later.

That is very weird. I seriously don't think that you can ever die in real life if you die in a dream. I am not sure about the sash being cut off the main cause, but I do know that you cannot die in a dream, trust me!

The Matrix is Hollywood Fiction. Do you suppose the first time I got killed in a dream that I wasn't totally expecting to die? So how would you explain that I didn't. There is only one explanation and that is What is True is True, and what is Hollywood Fiction written by prostituted screenwriters for meglomaniacal directors is probably nothing more than entertaining rubish, if it happens to be entertaining, and sometimes it hardly hits that mark. And regarding my personal opinion, "Constantine" kicked "Matrix" butt.

Ooooo i do agree Constantine is very good!
But what about those w/mentel dissablilites, ya' know the one's who create alternate realities for themselves, if they died in that alternate reality couldn't they die in the real world?

what about purported cases of people with MPD who only test positive for diabetes or some other condition when they are in a certain personality? Surely that has some relevance to this discussion.

And I know from personal experience that the mind can relieve pain for a short while, so why not induce it? but killing? that might be a little much for the mind, although I have been able to slow my heart rate on occasion.

In the History of the Universe nobody has ever died in their sleep but just a few lucky little old men who were able to dodge the overwhelming odds that dictate that little old men in the vast majority die upon the crapper with relief from constipation being their very last mortal thought. As for people still in the prime of their lives, NONE have awakened dead because of trouble they encountered in the Dream World. None! Of all the Organization to which I have belonged which have advanced the most cutting edge pioneering approaches to Dreaming and Out of Body Travel, NONE have died in their sleep or trance states... and it could not be because none of them have ever screwed up. It is not as though any of us are carrying a detailed User's Manual on this stuff, or would read it if we did, or, if having read it, would bother to follow the Safety Cautions.

The odds are greater of you dying by being hit by lightning TWICE then of dying from complications of Dreaming or Mediation.

I didn't mean u die in ur in sleep. 1stly the matrix thing was a joke. if i went by that movie on my every day life...i would be more than a li'll insane i can admit i'm already a li'll insane. But i'v just heard of experiences where people who are in como's, or just crazy alternate reality people, are able to convince themselves of being in some danger or great pain that causes real difficulty in keeping them alive. Your body is able 2 shut itself down btw. Let's not forget that crazy experience w/the babies where they had 2 seperate rooms, 1 - where the babies had nurses not only give them basic needs like food & keeping them clean, they held them when they cried talked to them & such...the 2 - the babies were simply only given what was neccissary 2 survive....all the babies in room 1 lived; whereas, all the babies in room 2 died, say for one where he was the favorite of a certain nurse so he was stroked on the cheek every once in a while. The experimentation proved that the ones who didn't feel loved or important, well their bodies simply shut down.
My point in all of this - Your mind does have the power to influence death.

there is scientific evidence to prove this somewhere, i know there is...i heard a psychologist talking about it on the television.
what actually happens is you can will yourself to die...this woman was talking about shamanic tribes, going into trances and that kind of thing (i don't think i quite bought that bit, before anyone jumps on me!)
the mind is a very powerful thing, and when you really will yourself to die, apparently various chemicals are released, and i think it's like some kind of overload...
don't quote me on it, i only caught half the damned report!!
although you can meditate yourself into a trance, so i guess anything is possible...and if we have the capacity to control our minds through lucidity, that's a pretty big thing to do.
      At least, in my book.

I think its probably urban legends or stories. My teacher told us this story at school:

      http://www.snopes.com/horrors/gruesome/freezer.htm

I'm not sure if its real, or even possible, but i'm leaning toward saying its not. I think we can be sure its highly unlikely. Killing yourself in a dream would be a pretty hard thing to do, and seeing as a lot of people, probably everyone, has 'died' in a dream at one stage, and we're all still alive, (lol, don't argue with my logic) i think its safe to say its not something to worry yourself with.

Ive died in dreams....quite a few times, i even got sawed in half once. that was pretty fucked up. i felt no pain and just thought wtf was going on, then another dream started.

anyways if it was true then not many people would survive anything at all.

e.g.you get shot and think oh shit im dead now, so you die? no, you dont, the only reason ud die is if you suffered from some sort of serious injury and it either couldnt be or wasnt treated in time.

e.g.2.you fall from a building, right before u hit the floor, u truly believe your about to die.does that mean you WILL die, once again, no it doesnt. just as if in a dream you truly believe ull die, but you dont, and if in a dream u truly believed ud die and u did, then it'd also happen in reality. but it doesnt, so as some others have said, the only reason you'd die for real if in a dream, would be due to a serious weak heart problem, or maybe even some other sort of thing, like a virus thats slowly been eating away at you and finally finishes its business as you slept one night.

The only "sci-fi" I know of is a genre of entertainment. Other than that, who knows?

A Sci-fi is short for Science Fiction, & the main reason I call them that is for the fact that not only are they WILDs, but it is combined WILD, FA, & Real Life. Well, in addition to flying in a white robe & having a duplicate (which in my opinion, sounds very Sci-fi to me!)!

Well, I noticed a little while ago that there is a blue sash that trails behind me. My boss told me that in a Sci-fi, if the sash is severed, I will die. So far, though, I haven't seen anything that can severe it, so I think that it is likely safe!!
So really, don't worry about it!

It's not true; my Dad said he had a dream where he fell and hit the bottom before he woke up.
