Well, it depends. When I take melatonin it makes it more difficult for me to stay awake at night and write in my journal and sometimes I wake up tired and don't want to write down what I just dreamed. At any rate, I haven't taken it to the point where I've found a pattern. I also think that other factors would tie into it such as mood, amount of sleep, nutrition, etc.

I've experienced "slightly" more vivid dreams with melatonin, but it never had any effect at all on my dream recall. With the exception of maybe 1 night where I had melatonin and I didn't remember my dream, but only cause I had gone back to sleep after waking, so I forgot it the 2nd time I woke up, lol.

      Melatonin/Valerian Root

Often times I take melatonin or valerian root to ensure I get a solid sleep. I find that it knocks me out quite powerfully, and the next day my dream memories are not accessible. Most of the dreams I remember come from the last hour or two of sleep. When I take melatonin it takes me a long time to "wake up", even as I'm ambling around. As a result, there's no abrupt shift from sleep to wakefullness, which is what I find it takes for me to remember dreams.

So yes, I can agree with you on that. Here's a lnk to another forum with a discussion on the effects of melatonin: http://www.ld4all.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6071, and here's a survey on it: http://www.charm.net/~profpan/melresults.html
